2023 Ontario New Year Open: Quick Hits I

We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Ontario's New Year Open. This was a great opportunity for players to get in front of our staff before teams begin heading to Florida in March for live action outdoors. The event, and all open events, serve as identifiers for PBR Canada Selects rosters that attend national and regional PBR events such as the Future and Jr. Future Games, West Coast Games, NorthEast Senior Games and New York State Games.
Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we continue our post-event coverage with reports and video on six standouts from the event.

Ben Goodacre RHP / OF / Ancaster, ON / 2025Goodacre was the main attraction on the mound at the Ontario New Year Open. Standing 6-foot-2, 170-pounds, Goodacre looks right on the mound and has the stuff to back it up. He worked downhill 86-88 T89.5 with the FB that showed life through the zone (2349 avg rpm, 21.9 IVB) and a 2-plane breaking ball (2319 avg rpm) and a SPL. Goodacre showed offseason improvement and is primed for a big summer. He will be a strong follow on the mound in the 2025 class.

Christos Tassopoulos 2B / OF / Bill Crothers Secondary School, ON / 2024Rankings StateRank: 39 / POS: 1
This was the best we have seen from Tassopoulos to date. Looks stronger in the box standing 6-foot-3, 183-pounds, the ball was flying off his bat gap-to-gap with a max EV of 93.5 mph and a 318ft max distance. Tassopoulos showed above average feel for the barrel (87 sweet spot %) and put together one of the more mature rounds of the day. The bat is the carrying tool in his game and will be big going forward in his college recruitment. Definitely a bat to keep tabs on.

Owen Ralph SS / RHP / Riverdale, ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 11 / POS: 3
Ralph flashed his upside in all facets of his game today. Standing 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, he sat 83-84 on the mound with an athletic, repeatable delivery and feel for his offspeed stuff. Smooth mover on the infield with athletic actions and quick feet side to side, the arm will play on the left-side of the diamond. In the box, it’s a simple, compact stroke with good extension through the ball. He worked the big part of the field with consistent loft and a max EV of 89.4 mph (286.3 ft max distance). The former Junior Future Gamer is one of Ontario's top 2025’s and proved why once again today.

Cam Gravelle SS / 2B / Grimsby, ON / 2024Gravelle showed well on both sides of the ball today at the Ontario New Year Open. On the infield, he shows quick footwork with range to his sides and an accurate arm across the diamond with the ability to throw from different arm-slots. In the box, he doesn’t get cheated, putting together one of the more complete rounds of BP with a whippy bat through the zone and a max EV of 90.9 mph. Standing 5-foot-8, 160-pounds, Gravelle is one to have on your radar.

Owen Gregg SS / 3B / Appleby College, ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 2 / POS: 2
The 2nd ranked 2025 in Ontario continues to impress our staff with his actions on both sides of the ball. On the defensive side, he stays in his legs well with quick actions and carry across the diamond. At the dish, it’s short to the ball with feel for the barrel to the middle of the field, top-of-the-order profile and finished with a top EV of 86.7 mph. Gregg was one of the better infielders at the JFG’s last year and he will look to carry that into this upcoming season.

Robert Omidi SS / 3B / St. Martin Secondary , ON / 2027Rankings StateRank: 7 / POS: 2
Omidi has had several strong showings over the past year and continued his upward trend in Ontario’s 2027 class. A physical 6-foot, 175-pound build, Omidi flashes signs of hitterish-traits from the left-side. Natural loft in his swing path, he looks to do damage with every swing using the whole field with a max EV of 92.7 mph. On the infield, he gets to the ball fast with athleticism and smooth footwork and an accurate arm with carry across the diamond. Omidi has inserted himself in the conversation as one of the top 2027’s in the country.
