2023 Ontario New Year Open: Quick Hits II

We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Ontario's New Year Open. This was a great opportunity for players to get in front of our staff before teams begin heading to Florida in March for live action outdoors. The event, and all open events, serve as identifiers for PBR Canada Selects rosters that attend national and regional PBR events such as the Future and Jr. Future Games, West Coast Games, NorthEast Senior Games and New York State Games.
Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we continue our post-event coverage with another set of Quick Hits, highlighting five more standouts from the event.

Will Timpano C / 3B / Patrick Fogarty Catholic, ON / 2024Rankings StateRank: 83 / POS: 11
Timpano (5-foot-10, 195-pounds) was a big winner on the day and behind the plate there was a lot to like. The arm stands out with a quick-actions, the transfer was smooth and easy while the footwork was simple but efficient. At the plate the right-handed swing was loaded, he stays above the baseball and didn’t miss many barrels. Lots to like from the uncommitted 2024 catcher.

Nathan Kaczmarek RHP / 3B / Maxwell Heights , ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 35 / POS: 3
Kaczmarek (6-foot-2, 195-pounds) had his present strength on display at the New Year Open. On the mound the arm action was whippy with a ¾ arm slot. He lived low in the zone throughout his bullpen with quick, efficient movements down the mound. In the infield the actions were clean with arm strength on his throws across the field. In the box the swing was aggressive from the right-side with loud contact and bat control. Strong showing for the uncommitted 2025.

Mason Ault C / 3B / Ancaster, ON / 2025Ault (6-foot, 180-Pounds) looked comfortable thoughout the day at the New Year Open. Behind the plate the actions were clean and he moved well with arm strength on display. In the box the swing has good tempo and repeated load. Ault did not get cheated with hard contact and flat path throughout the round. Will be a name to keep an eye on in the 2025 class.

Grayson Briggs OF / RHP / Donald A Wilson Secondary School, ON / 2024Briggs (6-foot, 165-pounds) flashed several tools at the event. In the outfield the footwork was clean with improved arm strength on display. On the mound the arm action was smooth with repeated release point on all his pitches. The fastball lived down in the zone, CH had some arm-side run to it and the curveball had depth. In the box the swing is geared towards the middle of the field. Briggs stayed flat with quality plate coverage throughout the round. Briggs has noticeably added size and strength this offseason.

Alexander Tassopoulos SS / 1B / Bill Crothers Secondary School, ON / 2026Tassopoulos (6-foot-3, 180-pounds) was a player that stood out on the day. The body stands out with a built athletic frame that projects well in the infield. Had a strong showing in the infield with smooth hands and quick footwork towards the ball. At the plate the swing was level with not many moving parts and lived up the middle and to the pull side with hard contact. There’s lots to like with the body and actions. Tassopoulos will be one to follow in his class this summer.
