Cambridge Cubs Scout Day: Quick Hits

On Sunday, October 30th PBR Ontario hosted it's final organizational Scout Day of the year with a 45-player session with the Cambridge Cubs. The Cubs, a program out of the EBLO, had a boatload of talent of display with a solid group of unsigned seniors, along with some intriguing 2026s to follow over the next several years.
The event saw several major standouts on both sides of the ball and we continue to break it all down below with video and analysis on five standouts.

Alex Brdarevic OF / RHP / Westmount Secondary School, ON / 2023Brdarevic had the best overall showing at Cambridge Scout Day. Standing 6-foot-6, 200-pound he immediately stood out when he walked in the building. On the mound, he sits in the low 80’s with an arm action that works and commands the zone well. At the dish, he flashed some pull-side pop and crushed baseballs on the inner half. He worked up to 90 mph in the outfield with athletic movements. Brdarevic would be an easy pickup for JUCO’s going forward.

Justin Hawke RHP / 2B / Bluevale C.I., ON / 2023Hawke, 6-foot, 165-pounds impressed on the mound during Cambridge Scout Day. He worked 79-81 with a long/loose arm action and some ASR during his pen. He mixed in a downer SL and a CH that both lived down at the knees. Hawke is an interesting uncommitted senior that has a chance to pitch at the next level.

Ethan Mercado C / 2B / St. Edmund Campion Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2023Mercado was the clear standout behind the dish during our bullpen portion of the event. Agile and flexible behind the dish, Mercado showed the ability to move side to side while blocking. He showed soft hands while receiving the low pitch well. At the dish, he let it loose during his round with an aggressive pull-side approach with a 89.4 mph EV. Mercado would be an easy steal for a JUCO behind the dish.

Willem OReilley SS / 2B / St.Thomas Aquinas , ON / 2023O’Reilley was one of the better middle infielders on the day when he flashed some quick, athletic actions with arm strength across the diamond. He works with proper footwork and soft hands, as well. On the mound, he pounded the zone with all of his pitches, including a 12-6 CB. Willem is an uncommitted senior that shows all the right actions on the field.

Judah Bailey OF / RHP / Westmount Secondary , ON / 2023Bailey, 5-foot-9, 155-pounds, had a good overall day at the Scout Day last week. In the OF, he showed athletic movements and a 86 mph arm that looked right as well as running one of the faster home-1st times at 3.78 sec. On the mound, he pounded the zone with the FB in the mid 70’s and had a good feel for his CB that showed depth and a CH. The athleticism and arm are his strengths and he did a good job at playing those tools up.
