Canadian Spotlight: 2015 Mat Szabo (Sarnia, ON)

By Mike Penn
Michigan Director of Scouting

Over the past year we have seen a steady trickle of Canadians cross the border and attend one of our showcases.  This summer Mat Szabo (Sarnia, ON) made a name for himself at the Great Lakes Elite Showcase.

Szabo came in as an unassuming lanky righty that certainly passed the “eye test” walking in the door.  We knew little about him other than he played for the Windsor Selects and he is a Class of 2015 graduate.  We left the showcase impressed with his potential.

Szabo is a good overall athlete who stands at 6-foot-1, 155-pounds.  He ran well to start the day by completing his 60 time in a respectable 7.0 time.  But what stood out the most was his arm.

On the mound is where Szabo projects the most.  He ranged between 81-86mph on the day with his fastball with the majority of pitches sitting 82-84mph.  His secondary stuff was solid overall.  His breaking ball had good spin to it and should continue to improve as he finishes out in front more.

Being in the Class of 2015 and having so much more room to fill out, Szabo should have multiple opportunities to play at the next level in the U.S.  He will be one to follow coming out of Canada in the next few years.

Many more quality Canadian players will have a chance to make their name on the recruiting scene just like Szabo, at the first annual Border Battle Games on September 28-29th.
