THUNDER BAY, Ontario - When playing for a summer team is a two-hour flight or a 16-hour drive away, dedication is needed. That is the case for Will Droll, a St. Ignatius junior who is a member of the Toronto Mets travel squad.

“I see all the talent in southern Canada and their goal is college baseball,” noted Droll about his desire to play with the Mets. “I love that idea.”

The top-ranked junior left-handed pitcher in Canada stayed with his grandparents last summer, 30 minutes from the Mets’ facility, and plans are to do the same this year.

“It’s trouble getting to places, but it’s worth it,” Droll said.

Chris Kemlo, PBR Canada Director of Scouting, is impressed with the devotion Droll has shown to the game while seeking exposure.

“He has kind of flown under the radar,” Kemlo said of Canada’s 11th-rated 2021. “Just being where he's from in Thunder Bay, people don't always get to see him every day like the local kids, so he's maybe not at the top of some guys’ lists when they think of 2021 arms. But for me, and for us here at PBR, we love him. He's always thrown strikes and always had that curveball he can go to.

“The velo is starting to tick up and I know he's going to be a real good sign for some school,” Kemlo continued. “The commitment he has to put in on his own shows you the type of dedication he has to the game, and to himself.”

The hard work has Droll starting to draw interest, with Maine the lone visit to date.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Droll said of the November trip to the America East Conference school. “After going to Maine, I have a better understanding of what a visit is all about.”

Interest from Xavier, Stetson, North Dakota State and Central Michigan is now there for the 6-1, 185-pounder.
