Future Games Trials - Quick Hits

Josh Arce
PBR Canada Scout

On Friday, April 15, our PBR Ontario staff hosted our first Future Games Trials of the year at the Athlete Matrix in Mississauga, home of the Ontario Blue Jays. This was our first major event of the year tailored towards selecting our 2022 Canadian Future Games team.

Our scouting staff got a look at over 80 Future Game eligible players and they didn't disappoint. There were plenty of bats from the 2024 and 2025 classes, while we had a dozen arms at 84+ mph.

Our post-event coverage continues below as we break down three players who jumped out to our staff last Friday.

Chazz Grossington SS / 2B / Silverthorn Collegiate, ON / 2024

Grossington, 5-foot-11, 170-pounds, was a standout at the dish and in the field at the Future Games Trials. Grossington defence stands out immediately the way he glides to the ball and how quick and smooth his hands are. He was his usual self in the infield, showcasing his hands and arm strength finishing the day with an 85 mph INF velo. In the box, he sprayed the ball all over the ballpark showing off his gap-to-gap approach. Grossington will look to have a big summer in 2022 and we will continue to follow him as he develops.

Austin Boylan 3B / SS / Bill Crothers Secondary School, ON / 2025

Boylan, 5-foot-7, 170-pounds, was a standout at the OBJ Scout Day earlier this month, and he continued to impress our staff at the Future Games Trials. In the field, he moves well with his strong, stocky build and has good footwork. He gets into his legs nicely and had an INF velo of 82 mph. At the dish, Boylan had one of the most consistent rounds on the day driving line drives to the big part of the ballpark with show hands through the zone and good extension as he finished the day with a top exit velo of 90 mph. With time to grow and add even more size, Boylan is a physical infielder that has a chance to be alright.

Carson Tehan RHP / OF / Sandwich Secondary School, ON / 2024

Tehan, 5-foot-11, 173-pounds, is one of the more exciting arms in the 2024 class and he showed why at the Future Games Trials. He is a guy who starts out of the stretch, with a repeatable delivery and throws all his pitches in a similar arm slot throwing quality strikes. Tehan is 86-88 mph with arm side run on the FB with 3 quality secondary offerings. CB is 74-75 with 12-6 movement that bites hard going through the zone. The SL has sweeping action  sitting 74-75 mph and the CH is 78-79 mph with some fade. Tehan will be a close follow this summer in the 2024 class as we expect the velo to continue to rise.
