Montreal Baseball Academy Scout Day: Quick Hits

Cam Black-Araujo
Lead Scout, PBR Canada

On Tuesday, September 13th, our staff headed indoors in Montreal for the Montreal Baseball Academy (MBA) Scout Day. The program’s hitters took BP in front of our staff, followed by bullpens and live at-bats for the arms. All players in attendance had verified numbers on-site through our state-of-the-art technology partner, TrackMan.

MBA gave us a look at several intriguing 2024 - 2026 prospects within Quebec and we begin to break it all down below with five of the standouts from the event.

Andrew Jamgotchian RHP / OF / John Rennie , QC / 2024

Andrew Gamgotchian, a 2024 RHP/OF, was one of the top performers at the MBA Scout Day, displaying upside on the mound and in the box. 5-foot-10, 145-pounds with loose actions in his game. Worked mostly with a fastball/curveball combination and had the ability to locate both. He generated late swings on the fastball at 78-80 T81 and mixed his pitches well, keeping hitters uncomfortable and guessing. Also a left-handed hitter with a simple, level swing that will only get better with added strength, along with the rest of his game.

Elihah D'Souza OF / Beaconsfield High School, QC / 2025

2025 OF Elijah D’Souza was one of the top young prospects in the program and his projectable right-handed swing stood out immediately. Already lots to like with frame at 6-foot, 155-pounds and although it wasn’t the most consistent round of BP, he flashed his upside when he was timed out and catching the ball out front. A young prospect to keep an eye on as he fills out and adds strength.

Fernando Paredes RHP / OF / Ecole secondaire Edouard-Monpetit, QC / 2024

There’s no doubt Paredes was one of the most physical players in the MBA program and posted some of the top numbers on both sides of the ball. Strong, sturdy frame at 5-foot-10, 190-pounds and the lower-half/hips help create a heavy bat through the zone. Consistent round a lot of hard contact and top exit velo of 88.7mph. Showed well on the mound with a fastball at 75-78mph and pounded the zone with it. More upside offensively but he showed the look of someone who can get it done on both sides right now.

Mathis McKenna LHP / OF / Cite-des-Jeunes, QC / 2025

2025 LHP/OF Mathis McKenna is one of the top young pitching prospects in the program and looked the part on Tuesday. Lots to like at first glance as a 6-foot, 155-pound left-hander and he moves well on the mound. Fastball sat 70-74, along with a breaking ball at 63-64 with feel to spin it. He was able to locate to both sides of the plate and could throw the offspeed for strikes, including a changeup that has potential. Still has lots of growing to do and some velocity to gains to come, but it’s an intriguing package on the mound.

Austin Brown OF / RHP / Laval Senior Academy , QC / 2023

2024 RHP Austin Brown had a clean, quick arm on the mound that sat 77-78mph. Pounded the strike zone with all his pitches and his stuff seemed particularly tough on right-handed hitters. Slider creates good horizontal movement at 69-71mph and he’s comfortable with the pitch in any count. Still has lots of strength to gain at 5-foot-10, 145-pounds but there’s feel for the mound and feel for his stuff. Also posted one of the top exit velo's at the event, 88mph.
