The 2022 New York State Games got underway Monday from Dutchess Lumber Sports Complex in Cortland, New York. The opening day included a showcase for the PBR Canada Selects, followed by their first game.

Their were roughly 50 college coaches in attendance on Day One, including 15+ Division I programs, and the Canadian squad showed well, both in the showcase and in-game. Below, we highlight five standouts from the showcase and the game.

THE SHOWCASE

Sawyer Pace 2B / SS / Tecumseh Vista Academy, ON / 2023

Pace stood out on the Canada Selects in every portion of the showcase. He started by running a 7.28 60-yard dash and followed it up with a clean round at SS. He had good footwork and actions, along with carry on his accurate throws. At the dish, the left-handed hitter worked middle to pull side with consistent, hard line-drive contact. With all the scouts in attendance, Pace definitely caught some attention early on at the NY State Games.

Maddox Shaver SS / RHP / Eastside Secondary School, ON / 2023

Shaver, a 5-foot-7, 170-pound OF/SS had an impressive first day at the New York State games. Looked good in the outfield with a quick loose arm action, kept the throws on a line with a top outfield velo at 86mph. At the plate the swing was loaded with good torque in his lower half. Worked pull side for majority of his round, had a good launch angle on the baseball with a couple leaving the yard. Good looking uncommitted talent that should have a lot of interest from college programs.

Frank Anthony Caietta RHP / OF / Holy Trinity Catholic , ON / 2023

Caietta, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound RHP/OF showed off his range and power on the day. A player that turns heads when he gets off the bud with his big burley frame. Had the top 60 yard time with a 7.08. In the outfield the arm had some pick up on it, moved well getting to the baseball with a long quick arm action. At the plate the swing was quick with good loft on it, had good extension on his hands while staying inside the baseball. Look forward to seeing Caietta get the ball in game 3 tomorrow.

Mylo Pereira 3B / 2B / Ontario Virtual , ON / 2024

Pereira, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound infielder was one of the standouts in the field and in the box early on in the day. In the field the feet moved well side to side, had some carry on his throws across the diamond. At the plate the swing was twitchy with lots of loud barrels to the gaps. Had one of the top Exit Velos on the day at 94mph. The size stands out at the corner with a wide athletic frame. Lots of upside in the uncommitted 2024 that continues to impress.

Preston Vieira C / OF / Maxwell Heights, ON / 2024

Viera, a 5’9 155lbs catcher looked good behind the plate throughout the day. The feet stood out with quick actions, had a fast transfer out of the glove with a short arm action. Had the best pop time on the day with a 2.14. At the plate the swing was smooth and easy with some pop off the bat in his round of bp. Lived mostly pull side with some solid barrels to the opposite field. Will be a name to look out for in the future.

IN-GAME

Will Lewis RHP / Villanova, ON / 2023

Lewis, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound pitcher for the Windsor Selects looked solid early on in the first game of the New York State Games. Went 4 innings giving up one run on the day attacking hitters early and often. Kept hitters off balance with a solid 3 pitch mix. The fastball had some cut to it, slider was tough to pickup keeping hitters out front and a curveball that has some sharp bite to it. An interesting uncommitted 2023 that has turned some heads.

Adrian Harrison SS / 2B / Essex District, ON / 2023

One of the biggest takeaways from Game One was the Harrison and Pace combination up the middle. Played 2B, although a true SS, and fielded balls cleanly with quick actions. Throws were consistently on the money and he helped turn four double plays in the 6-inning game. Alongside his teammate Pace, Harrison was one of the top infielders today on the Canada Selects.

Sawyer Pace 2B / SS / Tecumseh Vista Academy, ON / 2023

There’s no doubt Pace was the biggest standout among the Canadian players with his actions and reliability at short, alongside his left-handed bat and speed. He was the spark plug and brought the energy offensively, picking up an opposite field single in the first inning before stealing second and third. Made all the plays up the middle with clean and smooth actions. No doubt Pace set himself apart on Day One.

Aidan McDonald RHP / OF / Grimbsy, ON / 2022

McDonald came on in relief and worked a clean first inning, sitting down all five batters he faced. He was able to establish the fastball and locate with it. He worked with a breaking ball that 12-6 action and he was able to keep down for swings/misses. It was a good showing from the McDonald who was able to get outs and will take the mound again tomorrow for the Canada Selects.

Mikey Brunetti C / IMG Academy, FL / 2023

Brunetti joined the Canadian Selects as a prospect from New York and quickly impressed his Northern teammates with a well-rounded game. Strong, sturdy frame at 5-foot-11, 205-pounds and he’s athletic for his size. Strong hands through the zone with a quick bat and good path that allows him to drive balls to all fields. Quick transfer and catch/throw behind the plate that plays in-game.
