North Toronto Scout Day: Quick Hits

Josh Arce
PBR Canada Intern

On Saturday, October 1st, the PBR Ontario staff returned to Toronto for our fourth and final Scout Day of the week. This time it was the North Toronto Athletics, a strong program that represented Ontario at this summer's 15U Ray Carter Cup National Championship.

The day gave our staff a look at 21 players in the organization with a large group of 2024 - 2026 players with lots of upside, along with some unsigned 2023s looking to play at the next level. Our staff ran the players through a pro-style workout, along with Swift Performance Testing and bullpens/batting practice utilizing our TrackMan machine.

Below, our post-event coverage concludes as we provide scouting notes and video on five of the players who impressed at the event.

Connor Mallon OF / LHP / Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute, ON / 2024

Mallon, 5-foot-8, 140-pounds, was easily one of the more mature players in the North Toronto organization. On the mound it's a long, clean arm action with lots of strikes. Repeatable delivery with a feel for his change-up, that showed fading action. In the box he showed some feel for the barrel with line-drives to his pull side. There is something there and Mallon will be a follow going forward in the organization.

Joshua Samuels SS / RHP / Maple, ON / 2025

Samuels, 5-foot-9, 155-pounds, was possibly the most intriguing player with the most up-side in the organization. He had a well rounded day, showing well in the field, the box, and on the mound. He showed athletic actions around the infield with soft hands. In the box, he starts in an open stance and gets on time with a small leg kick, with the ability to get the ball in the air consistently. On the mound, Samuels showed a clean, short arm action from a healthy slot sitting 76-79 with more to come. The SL has potential to be a legit secondary offering. Samuels will be a definite follow going forward.

Max Wiklander RHP / 1B / Crescent School, ON / 2025

Wiklander immediately stood out when he was on the field at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds. He works downhill with a feel for the strike zone with all 3 of his pitches. The FB sat 77-79 (T79.9) and there is definitely more in the tank. Wiklander is an intriguing arm that we will keep tabs on going forward as he continues to get stronger and develop his secondary offerings.

Keegan Covert SS / RHP / North Toronto , ON / 2023

Covert, a 5-foot-9, 139-pound unsigned senior had a good overall day at North Toronto Scout Day. In the field, he shows the right actions and footwork with an accurate arm across the diamond. At the dish, he sprayed the ball from foul line to foul line with some feel for the barrel. On the mound, it’s a mid-70’s FB that pounds the zone with a CB and CH for secondary offerings. Covert is an interesting 2-way player in the North Toronto organization.

Colby Edwards RHP / OF / Huron Heights Secondary, ON / 2023

Edwards, 5-foot-11, 170-pounds, had a good round of BP during North Toronto Scout Day. He worked with a line-drive approach that played to all fields, finishing with a top EV of 87.5. He gets on plane with a short, flat swing and has a good feel for the barrel (80% sweet spot). Edwards is an unsigned senior to keep your eyes on.
