Barrie Scout Day Notes

PBR Ontario went up Hwy 400 to check out the talent at Barrie Scout Day inside beautiful Coates Stadium. Here’s a look at a few standouts from the day.

Owen Lackie SS / C / Eastview S.S., ON / 2022

Report: Lackie spent some time behind the plate and in the infield, but when you look at him it’s tough to say where he’ll end up. Right now he’s 6-foot-2, and 150-pounds without any muscle on him, but his actions look fluid all over the diamond. Behind the plate he hovered around a 2.00 POP time, attributed more to a quick transfer and release. At the plate the swing is pretty free and easy, and once he adds some overall strength to his game he has a chance to be alright.

Duncan McLean OF / RHP / Barrie North Collegiate, ON / 2022

Report: You could argue that McLean had the best overall day at Scout Day, even though he didn’t have the loudest numbers. While his hands worked in the infield and the arm played in the outfield, it was the bat that stood out most for the uncommitted 2022. Swinging from the left side he shows balance and barrel feel to the pull side with an 87 mph exit velo. Give him some time and McLean could be a decent college hitter if he stays on track.

Matt Rumney RHP / OF / Georgian Bay District Secondary , ON / 2022

Report: Something has to be said about how Rumney showed up on Sunday to pitch, play the infield and the outfield - and he led every category in arm strength. What’s more is the 6-foot-3, 170-pound righty did so coming off an ankle injury the week prior. More than anything, Rumney projects best as an arm and while the velo was around 80 mph all day, there’s length, looseness, the arm works and he has a lot of room to fill the body.

Gabe King 1B / RHP / Our Lady of the Bay Catholic, ON / 2022

Report: Another long and lean 2022, King has all the makings of a corner infielder who can hit. An 89 exit velo from the left side with a balanced swing, 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame and some arm strength across the diamond gives King a chance to be super projectable on the diamond. From a performance standpoint King didn’t flash big numbers, but the actions and feel is there.

Ty McGuirk SS / 3B / Collingwood Collegiate Institute , ON / 2025

Report: An exciting young 2025, the first thing you notice about McGuirk is the length of his limbs. Already 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, McGuirk has an easy swing with tempo, he finishes high and catches lots of barrels. He’s not strong quite yet, but based on the way he’s shaped and the way he moves, it’s easy to tell there could be something there. As a kid who just started the 9th-grade, there’s a lot to dream on with McGuirk somewhere on the diamond.

Rylan Varcoe OF / OF / Bear Creek Secondary School , ON / 2025

Report: At 5-foot-10, 145-pounds, 2025 Rylan Varcoe is another kid in Barrie worth keeping an eye on. He doesn’t pass the eye test out of the gate, but the more you watch him play and sit on his swing, you can see he’s got some feel for the game. The hands are loose in the box and he has a solid grasp of how to hit the ball to all fields, from the left side no less. What was most impressive was his 7.16 time in the 60-yard dash - the second best time of the day on thick, dewy grass. Give him some time, and if he puts on some size and strength over the next couple of years, Varcoe has the makings of a left-handed hitting leadoff stick who can play some outfield as well.
