Prospects Scout Day Notes

We take a look at some of the players that stood out to us the most at Prospects Scout Day.

Trent Duncan OF / RHP / East Side Secondary, ON / 2022

Report: One of the more intriguing players on Scout Day, switch-hitter whose arm is his carrying tool. Ball jumps out of his hand in the outfield, at the plate he’s a switch-hitter who shows some juice from the left side, and more of a slap hitter from the right side. Stays balanced through the zone on both sides and an advanced feel for hitting despite being raw. On the mound it’s loose, up-tempo and clean, fastball sits 80-81, curveball is in the 67-69 range. Overall Duncan shows athleticism all over the diamond, and it’s tough to tell where he’ll end up, but he’s not short of options.

Mitchall Gordon RHP / 1B / Donald A. Wilson, ON / 2022

Report: On the mound, Gordon shows some presence. Fastball sits in the 82-84 range, works with an up-tempo delivery, throws exclusively from the stretch. CB has some depth to it, breaks early, he tends to fall off to his glove side. Already with some size and strength, Gordon has a chance to pitch at the next level. Strong 2022 grad with some bat speed and barrel feel, starts slightly open with a bit of a bat waggle. Uses a leg lift, has his timing mechanism, drives the ball to his pull-side with authority.

Maddox Shaver SS / RHP / Eastside Secondary School, ON / 2022

Report: Big, physical 2022 grad with obvious strength to his game. Lacks some barrel feel right now, but can do some damage when his timing is on. Approach is very raw, but there’s clear balance and a feel for hitting. Has a chance to hit well at the next level with some polish. Defensively the hands work, he moves around the infield well, but projects more as a second or third baseman, or even the outfield because he can run a bit.

David Noel LHP / 1B / Campbellford District HS, ON / 2023

Report: On the mound it’s clean, balanced and he works off both sides of the plate. The velocity isn’t there right now as the fastball sits in the mid-to-high 70s, but there’s arm-side action on it as he releases it from a low ¾ slot. At the plate he starts from a slightly open stance, front foot is on his toe, quick load that starts slightly late, whips the barrel through the zone well. Hands start low and he tends to turn the wrists through contact at times, but when he stays through he gets good line-drive carry to all fields.

DJ Mazzaferro SS / RHP / USS, ON / 2025

Report: Interesting young 8th-grader with feel and whip through the zone. Starts balanced, bat stays through the zone, hits to all fields, catches a lot of barrels and shows aggressiveness through the swing. Still weak, but as one of the younger players at Scout Day, it was a good indicator of things to come.

Leo DesRoches SS / 3B / Neil Mcneil, ON / 2025

Report: What DesRoches lacks in his height, he makes up for with his actions. In the infield he floats around the diamond well, hands and arm work as well. At the plate he shows good bat path from the left side, and has a good, high finish through his swing. On the mound he works down in the zone, works from a 3/4 arm slot, and fastball shows some arm-side run. He's young and lacks some strength, but he'll be in an interesting follow as he grows.
