Ontario Top Ten Breakdown: Top Viewed Prospect Profiles - #7 Austin Shields

Austin Shields#7 Austin Shields, RHP, St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School, 2016 (British Columbia/Pittsburgh Pirates)
Background: Shields stands 6-foot-6 230-pounds with a great pitchers frame. He stays tall using a high knee lift and balanced over the rubber and drops some on his back leg moving forward. He uses proper shoulder alignment and throws from a high-¾ slot using a long arm action and plus extension. His fastball sits 92-94 mph with late jump and some run. He shows the ability to spin a breaker at 81-83 mph with 11/7 late hard shape. Also features a 86-87 mph changeup.

Overview: Shields may have shown the most improvement over the past year. The 6-foot-6, 220-pounder has changed his body and been up to 94 mph on the gun to go along with a low-80s slider that flashes the potential to be a solid pitch. The talented RHP came in at the 3rd spot in the province while also coming up at the 70th spot overall for PBR. Shields was a British Columbia commit, but was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 33rd round.
