PBR Spotlight Game: Great Lake Canadians 16/17u vs. Ontario Blue Jays 17u

Scarborough - On Saturday, the GLC team of 16/17 year olds traveled to Dan Lang field to take on the OBJ 17u squad for their first exhibition game in Ontario this year. This game featured some talented players with a handful of candidates for the prestigious PBR Future Games that take place in Indianapolis late July.

Game one saw GLC walk away with an 11-6 victory that seemed fitting for an early April date as games this early tend not to happen too often in Ontario. Between both teams combined, there was a total of 13 walks and 9 hit batters that added up to over a three hour affair.

On the mound in game 1 for GLC was one of the top prospects in the 2017 class, right-handed pitcher Tyler Whalen. This is the first look we got of Whalen in 2015

Whalen had a long first inning as he faced nine batters while giving up a three spot. He issued five walks in the inning so those three runs could of been a lot worse. He then proceeded to settle down, retiring eight in a row before a base hit, walk, base hit tacked on the fourth run of the day for OBJ. Whalen had three strikeouts on the day to go with six walks, five of which were in the first inning.

The last three innings of work belonged to Hunter Spoljaric. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander looked to be in fine form as he gave up one earned while striking out four. I look for Spoljaric to have a big summer and be a candidate for the Future Games in Indianapolis this summer.

Not a whole lot of damage was done at the plate by either side, which is hard to imagine with a final of 11-6.

Jake Wilson was 1-4 with 2 RBIs. Jameson Hart had two base hits up the middle with a run scored while Kian Bukala ended up 1-3 with a double, stolen base, two runs scored. Ryan Luke was 2-3 with a walk as an EH and ended up scoring two runs.

Outfielder Josh Szeto was 1-2 with a double, walk, and hit by pitch. Parker Walker was strong behind the plate. Handled balls in the dirt well and was 2.05, 2.08 down to second with life out his hand and accuracy. Andrew Leggo was 1-2 with a base hit and RBI while shortstop Ethan Cummins showed off his soft hands and baseball IQ while making a couple nice play on slow rollers and making a strong throw to nail a player trying to score on an infield hit.

TOP PERFORMERS OF THE DAY

+ Hunter Spoljaric pitched the final three innings giving up one earned and striking out four.

+ Ryan Luke was 2-3 with two runs scored.

+ Jameson Hart was 2-5 with and RBI and run scored.

Ethan Cummins was 1-4 with a run scored and strong defensive work at shortstop.
