PBR Spotlight Game: Team Ontario 16u vs Windsor Selects 16u

AURORA- Sunday morning was a sunny, yet breezy day that saw Team Ontario 16U face the Windsor Selects 16U at Stewart Burnett Park. Team Ontario swept the doubleheader 4-3 and 3-2 (extra innings).

Game one saw Team Ontario got off to a quick start in the 1st inning. 5 base hits including an RBI double to left-centre field from infielder Brandon MacInnis lead to a 3-run opening frame. Windsor’s right-handed starter Mitch Zimmerman struggled in the 1st allowing 2 of the 3 1st inning runs with 2 out, but then settled into a groove retiring 10 out of the next 11 hitters. Zimmerman went 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, striking out 6 and walking 3.

Windsor answered in their half of the 1st with a lead-off double from infielder Justin Doran and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 3-1. The Selects cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the 5th, but Ontario held on for the victory.

Ontario Starter John Carson went the distance for the win with a complete game allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, striking out 5 and walking 3.

In game two, it was a pitcher’s duel between Windsor’s right-hander Kimani Bailey and Ontario’s righty Adam Koffman. In the Select’s 1st, Doran lead off with a triple, but was thrown out at home while trying to score on a ground ball to 3rd base.

In the 4th, Windsor got on the board with a pair of runs, which began with catcher Aastin Curtis-Atkins’ leadoff single and came around to score on an error. Outfielder Connor Goldsmith also scored on an error after trying to be picked off by the catcher.

Team Ontario began chipping at the 2-0 deficit with a run in the 5th thanks to a two-out triple from outfielder Carter Johnson and scored on outfielder Tyler Justice’s RBI single to centrefield. Ontario tied the game in the 6th after C/1B Brady Fischer worked a 2-out walk and then scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams went back and forth and needed extra innings to solve game two. In the Ontario’s half of the 9th, outfielder Kyle Smyth lined a 1-out single to left and scored on Justice’s sacrifice fly. Windsor had a chance to tie and win the game with the bases loaded and 2-out, but Ontario’s RHP Connor Morton came in and picked up the save.

Koffman went 6 strong innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 2 and did not factor in the decision.

Bailey pitched a complete game allowing 3 runs on 10 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 4.
