PBR Spring Training Quick Hits 3.0

Cam Black-Araujo
Lead Scout, PBR Canada

The dust has settled on PBR Canada's 2022 Spring Training Event and we continue to catch up on everything that went down on the final few days of the event. After rain washed out nearly every game on Tuesday, it was a loaded schedule on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to make up for it.

We had three fields in use at PCB and it was a great experience for our scouting staff to bounce around between fields and get a glimpse of players from nearly every province in the country.

With 30+ games between the final two and a half days, our Lead Scout, Cam Black-Araujo, provides reports and video on eight players who elevated their performance to close out the week in Panama City Beach.

Cameron Macleod C / 1B / Argyle, BC / 2023

Cam MacLeod was another name who seemed to make a play everytime you looked over at Field 6 on Thursday. He was quiet and receiving the ball well behind the dish and also threw in behind a runner at second, flashing a quick transfer and arm strength. It’s a smooth, controlled right-handed swing with an aggressive approach, constantly looking to do damage. It wasn’t his best week at the dish but he flashed what he’s capable of when he crushed a double to dead-centre where he was on plane and on-time. A really good looking uncommitted 2023 who stood out from the rest of the group in PCB this week.

Tarek Emara OF / St. Marys Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2023

Uncommitted 2023 Tarek Emera had his speed and hit tool on display all week long. On the final two days of the event Emera racked up five hits and it seems like everytime you looked up, he was flying around the bases. It’s not the biggest frame and there’s some adjustments that need to be made at the plate but he’s a pure hitter who hits the ball hard to all fields. An exciting uncommitted 2023 out of the Titans program.

Mitchall Gordon RHP / 1B / Donald A. Wilson, ON / 2022

2022 Niagara County CC commit Mitchall Gordon was sharp on the mound throughout the week with his best start coming on Thursday against Oshawa. He struck out 15 over seven innings allowing just two runs on two hits. Although the velo was down this week for Gordon, there’s size on the mound and he works downhill. He worked in the 80-82 mph range and he was spinning the curveball well throughout the week. An arm we expect to have uptick in velocity before he steps on campus at NCCC.

Evan Ogston SS / Colonel By Secondary , ON / 2023

Thursday was a coming out party for uncommitted 2023 shortstop Evan Ogston. The right-handed hitter from the Ottawa Nepean Canadians was picking up hits all day long. It’s a line drive approach and he was consistently finding the barrel, hitting balls hard to all fields. Ogston ran a 7.11 on Scout Day and we’ve seen him run a sub-7.00 before. A good looking uncommitted prospect from the Ottawa area who should definitely have interest from college coaches after his performance this week.

Nolan Keating C / SS / Holy Cross Catholic Secondary, ON / 2022

Nolan Keating is a name we’ve been following all week long and he didn’t disappoint today. The uncommitted 2023 has a good looking swing from the left side and consistently makes hard contact. He gets started with a toe-tap and there’s good separation at the plate. He’s a catcher who does a lot of good things on both sides of the mound. Recently moved to the 2023 class and is worth a look from college coaches.

Mitchell Noseworthy 1B / 3B / Gonzaga , NL / 2023

Uncommitted 2023 1B/3B Mitch Noseworthy may have had the loudest swing on the day when he drove a fastball over the right field corner fence. Strong, lumber frame at 6-foot-1, 202-pounds and there’s power from the left side that he’s shown both in batting practice and in-game. The bat will be the carrying tool for the corner infielder from Newfoundland and he showed today what he’s capable of.

Tyler Wingfield OF / Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, ON / 2023

Uncommitted 2023 Tyler Wingfield was a standout this week from the Toronto Mets program. It’s a small frame at 5-foot-10, 150-pounds and there’s still a ton of growing left for the outfielder. The hit tool was real this week, working with a level bat path and good bat speed. He was moving well in the outfield and on the bases. On a PBR Red team that swung the bats well all week, Wingfield was a big part of that.

Max Jewusiak OF / 1B / Assumption, ON / 2024

2024 outfielder Max Jewusiak of Canes Canada immediately stood out with his strong frame at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds. That strength translates to the dish where he looks to do damage from the right side every at-bat. It’s a rhythmic swing where the hands start high and he stays inside the baseball. The Fieldhouse Pirates product had a top exit velocity of 88 mph and top batted distance of 329. The bat is the carrying tool right now and is definitely something to get excited about.
