SASKATCHEWAN SCOUT BLOG

We take a look at 5 players who attended the Open ID this fall and all of these players have the arrow pointing upwards when it comes to their tools, physicality and projection.

CORNELIUS WOUTERS 1B / LHP / CITY PARK COLLEGIATE, SK / 2023

Report: Wouters impressed on both sides but the mound is where the left-hander really caught our attention. Currently 6-foot-1, 205-pounds and room to add strength, Wouters pounded the zone with clean delivery and ¾ arm slot while doing a really good job of getting over his front side and finishing all his pitches. It’s a 3-pitch mix that he has good feel for and the stuff is going to play up as he matures and grows.

AUSTIN BERNER RHP / OF / MARTIN COLLEGIATE, SK / 2023

Report: Berner is a young 23’ grad who has a ton of projection physically as the legs are long and the upper half has lots of room to fill out. The actions on the mound are what made us take notice with Berner and the body control, tempo, and quickness of the arm out front are what make Berner real interesting. His curveball had a max spin rate of 2264 RPM at 69 mph and we can really see that becoming a pitch that had potential to be a put out and swing and miss. The fastball worked in the low 80’s and envision that number really jumping over the off-season and into next summer.

JAVIN BOYNTON 2B / SS / CENTRAL COLLEGIATE, SK / 2024

Report: Boynton stands out right away for his physicality as there is present muscle from head to toe and he is going to be able to tap into that as his development continues. Boynton ran a 6.78 and had a top exit velocity of 92 mph, speaking to the strength he has. The actions and tools are raw, but the left-handed bat and athletic tools he shows are reason to stay on him and track the development.

ZACHARY DOBSON RHP / 3B / SHELDON WILLIAMS COLLEGIATE, SK / 2022

Report: Dobson was very well rounded when we saw him as he ran a 6.95, had an exit velo off trackman during BP of 87 mph while he worked in the low 80’s with his fastball from a high-¾ slot and tunneled his curveball well from the same slot with depth and downward action. There is bat speed and upside to work with at the plate and the 6-foot frame of Dobson is only going to get stronger. Fundamentals in place here for the arrow to go up with Dobson.

TAKAO COOKSON RHP / C / MARTIN ACADEMY , SK / 2023

Report: Cookson is a 2023 utility player who did a lot of things well at the Saskatchewan Open ID and from many spots on the diamond. At the plate, its a quick and short swing that made a lot of contact out front, he showed confidence and feel for the glove on the infield while attacking balls and being athletic in his lower half. He got behind the dish where the feet and transfers were quick right from the beginning and also jumped on the mound and filled the strike zone. The 23’ had the gamer type feel to him and can contribute in many ways to help win ball games.
