Sattz's standouts: 5 players to watch in 2022

The calendar has officially flipped to 2022 and our PBR Ontario staff will continue breaking down everything you need to know across the province. With the current restrictions on baseball across the province, things will ramp up very quickly in February as teams prepare to head south in March.

Now just two months away from watching baseball, live outdoors, PBR Ontario Scout Ryan Sattz takes a look at five hitters who caught his eye this past year including a trio of unsigned seniors, an intriguing 2024 and a Power 5 commit.

Sam White C / SS / Aurora, ON / 2022

An impressive 2022 commit to West Virginia, White shows the tools of an overall solid player.  The swing is short and compact, with ability to catch the ball out front. White shows good leg extension on his swing and balance throughout. During at-bats White shows an aggressive approach, but doesn’t get cheated, using all parts of the field.

Ethan Price RHP / OF / St.Stephen Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2022

Price, a pitcher for the Oshawa Legionaires, doesn’t tower on the mound, but he competes with good stuff to go with it. The delivery is clean and easy, with good balance. Price has low-to-mid 80s stuff right now, a curveball with sharp break to it and feel for a changeup. He tunnels pitches well, making it hard for hitters to pick up spin.

Maddox Shaver SS / RHP / Eastside Secondary School, ON / 2022

Shaver, an uncommitted 2022 out of the Ontario Prospects, has tools to be a good college player. Shaver passes the eye test at a sturdy 5-foot-10, 170-pound athletic build. There’s also lots of strength in his lower half. His swing has loft to it, without too many moving parts. Shaver has a pull side approach with most of his hits being line drives. Defensively, he’s athletic enough to play almost anywhere on the diamond, it just comes down to which tools play up his bat.

Owen Lackie SS / C / Eastview S.S., ON / 2022

Lackie is an interesting 2022 from the Barrie Baycats, another player who can play multiple positions, he shows well behind the dish and in the infield, but his arm is his best tool. At the plate the swing is smooth and easy with a line drive approach, he just needs to get stronger. Once Lackie fills out, he could be a steal for colleges.

Owen Slater RHP / OF / Brooklin, ON / 2024

A 6-foot-2, 155-pounds, Slater is a tall and lanky right-hander who is a presence on the mound. The arm action is short and quick, while getting down the mound fast. He spins his curveball well with his ¾ arm slot, making it tough on righties. The body has room to grow and add muscle with time. If he continues to project upwards, he will be an interesting name in our 2024 class.
