OR Top Prospect Showcase - 2022 Prospects (pt. 3)

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Keizer, OR - Over the course of one full week, we had the opportunity to see over 100 players across multiple events at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.

Summer events events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future Games and Junior Future Games

Wiry build with an athletic frame at 5-foot-8, 150 pounds. Simple, balanced set-up in the box with some bend on rear leg to begin. Hands stay just above shoulder height with slight push back to load. Takes a short, controlled forward stride after a quick hover on back leg. Swing plane showed depth thru the zone with a flat finish thru contact. Stays balanced throughout with a quiet, still head. Defensively, showed crisp, rhythmic movement on the dirt with easy footwork. Keeps momentum going while working thru the ball. Maintains control of a soft glove hand when receiving. Consistent, clean exchange into throwing motion. Compact arm action from low ¾ slot. Gets rid of ball quickly, avoids any wasted movement.

Spencer Barnard SS / 2B / Mountainside , OR / 2022

5-foot-9, 150 pounds with strong legs for his frame and average build in his upper half. Starts in the box with a narrowly open lower half and tall posture. Uses a low leg lift to create a subtle weight shift onto his backside with a slight coil from his upper half. Slow, deliberate load with a soft landing as he gets into a wider hitting base. Smooth, fluid barrel path into contact. Keeps hands tight and stays connected throughout. High finish. In the infield, flashed sound, repeatable footwork and a consistent tempo with his actions. Tall pre-pitch set up with slight forward movement prior to his first step. Keeps a soft glove hand when funneling ball in. Short, bent arm action with a ¾ release point. Backside comes thru after release helping throws maintain carry to the bag.

Devin Bell SS / RHP / La Grande, OR / 2022

6-foot-2, 160 pounds with a lean build and length in his frame. Sets up with feet outside shoulder width, slight bend in knees and open lower half. Drives front knee towards back hip with a high leg kick. Stays tall, balanced as he gathers weight. Gets some length in lower half with a longer stride into landing. Hands show a slight move to adjust barrel angle prior to launching swing. Level, rotational finish with gap-to-gap type approach. Defensively, starts wide and uses a subtle pre-pitch hop as he reads the ball off the bat. Deliberate tempo when moving to the ball. Gets wide with a flat upper half over the ball while funneling in. Glove-tap exchange into long, loose throwing motion and low ¾ slot. On the mound, used a mechanically sound, repeatable delivery while working from the center of the rubber. High leg lift with slight collapse on back-side as he gets into hand break. Shoulder plane stays level as he gets down the slope. Slight cross action at landing with lead leg. Shorter, more compact arm action than he flashed on defense, allowing his arm to be on-time at foot strike. Tall, upright finish out over his front side.

Griffin Biggs OF / C / Tualatin , OR / 2022

Strong, stocky frame at 5-foot-10, 190 pounds. Upright, balanced set-up in the box with lower half slightly open to begin. Hands start below rear shoulder in a relaxed position. Uses a high leg kick to shift momentum back before taking forward stride. Hands stay tight to body as he lands in a balanced hitting base. Barrel works quick/direct into the zone. Holds posture thru contact with a high finish. Gap-to-gap type power. Defensively size/strength combination works well in the OF. Uses short, quick strides to cover ground, adjusting his footwork as needed to get thru the baseball. Aggressive tempo when ranging laterally. Consistent exchange into short, compact arm action with a low ¾ slot.

Jonathan Curry RHP / 3B / Lakeridge , OR / 2022

6-foot-1, 185 pounds with a developed build and proportional frame. At the plate, sets up with a square lower half and feet at shoulder width apart. Slight bend in knees with weight centered. Hands stay below rear shoulder and show some slight movement/rhythm. Takes a short, quick stride into forward move with minimal hand shift. Attacks the ball with a slight uphill path. Stays tall and creates leverage with his lower half. Defensively, starts with a tall, narrow base at the hot corner before making his first step towards the ball. Flashed some adjustability with his glove hand while funneling in. Let’s ball travel into his stance and catches it deeper before getting into exchange. High takeaway on exchange with short arm action and low ¾ release. On the mound, worked exclusively out of the stretch, keeping clean direction towards his target and landing on line with his stride. Stays tall at leg lift with a slight coil into his back hip. Pushes lead hip out as he separates and gets down the mound. Longer stride for his height. Slight glove tap to create tempo in arm swing. Uses same high takeaway as the INF, getting arm into cocked position and landing, staying on time with his delivery. Loose finish out front with a ¾ release point.

Tatum Erickson OF / Clackamas , OR / 2022

Wiry, athletic build on 5-foot-9, 150 pound frame. Wide set-up in the box with lower half aligned to pitcher. Upper half shows slight inward turn to begin. Shifts weight onto backside with a knee knock type load. Short scap load before rotating into swing. Creates some easy bat speed with a level barrel path into contact and lofted finish. Very few moving parts in swing, which allows the barrel to work easily. Stays balanced throughout. Moves well in the OF where his above average speed should allow him to be a consistent defender. Long, easy strides as he ranges to the ball. Shows quick start and stop ability. Uses an inside shuffle step to get momentum into throwing motion. Shorter arm path with a ¾ release point.

Eddie Farah 3B / OF / Tualatin, OR / 2022

5-foot-9, 170 pounds with a stocky, durable frame. Offensively, uses a wide, open stance in the box with front side closed off to pitcher. Takes a low leg lift as he balances on back-side into a short forward stride. Hands stay relaxed, showing a quiet load to create some stretch against his front side. Continues to display consistent barrel control and a knack for finding the barrel. Combination of bat speed & hand speed gives him some adjustability in swing and helps him spray hard contact. Defensively, starts tall & narrow before working in towards the hitter and getting into a wider, more athletic base at contact. Adjusted posture to get around the ball on opportunities that were hit right at him. Maintains tempo/body control while moving laterally. Soft glove hand when receiving the ball in. Short, compact arm action after exchange into a high ¾ release.

Ryan Hart OF / LHP / Jesuit , OR / 2022

Lean build at 5-foot-11, 160 pounds with a square build in his upper half. Tall, balanced stance in the box with upright posture. Lower half sets up just outside of shoulder width. Short, quick forward stride. Creates some rhythm with his hands to sync up with his forward move but keeps his load quick and repeatable. Hands stay tight to body, lets ball travel into the zone and keeps barrel inside at contact. Comes off of backside as he finishes swing with a high, lofted path. Size/frame translates well to OF. Takes smooth strides when moving towards the ball. Gets longer when going laterally and shortens up when approaching a ball straight on. Receives ball out in front then uses a side shuffle to get momentum behind his throw. Realigns shoulders to get direction working towards target. Short, quick arm path with a high ¾ release.
