Prep Baseball Report

Oregon Class of 2023 Rankings Update

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

The 2022 summer circuit has finished up and we are now onto the last graduating HS class for our summer rankings updates. We conclude with a loaded 2023 class that features a couple names that have attracted significant MLB Draft buzz.

Our updated list expands to 75 names in the class. While the top 3rd of the list is littered with college commitments, there is still a considerable amount of talent left throughout the sate.

Since its inception in 2005, the Prep Baseball Report has evolved into one of the country’s biggest and most respected independent scouting services, with a singular focus of providing comprehensive year-round coverage in every state we are in. The mission of the Prep Baseball Report is to scout and promote amateur baseball - high school, junior college and college - and, ultimately, help athletes achieve their dreams of playing baseball at the next level.

Rankings are based on evaluations by scouting director Dan Jurik as well as additional PBR scouts across the country who have seen prospects from the state at various events.

With a majority of the prospects on the list uncommitted, the goal is for this information to help assist  college coaches as they look to finalize their recruiting classes and add additional pieces to their roster.

OREGON CLASS OF 2023 RANKINGS UPDATE

top 3

There might not be another prep player in the country who elevated their prospect status more than ‘23 RHP Noble Meyer (Jesuit/Oregon commit). The uber talented righty is firmly in the mix as the top prep pitching prospect in the country and will undoubtedly receive 1st round consideration in the upcoming 2023 MLB Draft. Our 2023 Player of the Year for Oregon, Meyer recently jumped up to 94-96 at Area Codes while continuing to pound the zone with a reliable 3 pitch mix that features a wipeout SL in the upper 80s. Overall, he’s an elite prospect with a desirable starter profile for the next level.

‘23 LHP Paul Wilson (Lakeridge/Oregon State commit) is another name in the state that will have plenty of evaluators eyes on him once the 2023 season opens up in the Spring. Tall, athletic and projectable, Wilson has shown exceptional stuff across multiple events and in-game. During the HS season he was up to 96 mph with the FB and consistently held 92-95 on our looks. He works in 2 variations of his breaking ball and both can flash plus at times. While his present stuff is already impressive, he still has the chance to make even more gains to his arsenal. Another elite prep talent from the PNW who will have the chance to climb up draft boards next year.

‘23 SS Ryan Cooney (Jesuit/Oregon commit) has been a top 10 prospect in the class since our rankings debuted. In our newest update, he climbs up to the #3 spot thanks in large part to his terrific defense in the middle of the diamond and overall athleticism. Offensively he features a loose barrel at the plate with free, easy hands and strong wrists. While he might not need to throw often for a loaded Jesuit squad, he has plenty of aptitude on the bump as well with his FB/SL combo. Overall, very balanced prospect who can do a bit of everything on the diamond.

Dane Lais RHP / Oregon City, OR / 2023

‘23 RHP Dane Lais (Oregon City/Oregon State commit) went through his entire Junior year of HS baseball as an uncommitted prospect and then burst onto the scene, landing a P5 commitment to the Beavers and earning a spot on the Area Code roster. A physical, workhorse presence at 6’4, 200 lbs, he’s been up to 91-92 with easy effort and still has upside to tap into. He controls his delivery well for a big frame with a long/quick arm action that features plenty of extension out front. Don’t be shocked to see more velo in the near future and it might not take much for Lais to generate additional MLB draft buzz.

Drake Gabel LHP / OF / West Linn, OR / 2023

‘23 OF/LHP Drake Gabel (West Linn/Seattle) took a big step forward as a prospect in the latest update. A strong, 2-way prospect who has always done everything well, the FB velocity steadily creeped up and he started getting into the 85-87 range with his heater. The added velo makes his full arsenal on the bump even tougher to deal with. He’s also a very capable LH bat with the tools to stick in the OF.

Kaden Isola 1B / OF / Bend Senior, OR / 2023

‘23 OF/1B Kaden Isola (Bend) flashed above average power and bat speed across multiple events this summer. He carried that over into game action at the 2022 West Coast Games and recorded multiple hits across the event. At 6’3, 200 lbs, he’s a physical presence that can run well for his size and has the arm strength to hold down corner OF or 1B. Uncommitted.

Elliot Brown SS / OF / Grant, OR / 2023

‘23 OF/INF Elliot Brown (Grant) is a polished LH bat with the versatility and athleticism to handle plenty of spots on the diamond. The offensive potential really took a big step in the last 6 months as he flashed a smooth, quick stroke with a flat barrel path through the zone. Gap to gap type power. Defensively he’s done well at both SS and in the OF so his final landing spot on defense could likely be determined by how much stronger he gets in the next few months. Uncommitted.
