Oregon Power Rankings: Week 1

PBR Staff

Oregon high school baseball teams and players waited more than a year to get back to competition, and while there are still many difficulties that are being overcome daily, pitches are being thrown and balls are being hit all over the state. As has become the norm in this baseball-crazy state, the community rallies behind itself with coaches/parents/umpires/players/volunteers all making sacrifices so that the games can go on and the kids can compete. So kudos to all those involved who have helped get us back to the diamond to enjoy at least a small glimmer of hope and get away from the difficulties that are still being faced, even if just for a couple of hours.

With the state tournament being eliminated this year, and replaced with a “culminating week” (which we have some interesting ideas for...to be discussed at a later date), league titles become even more valuable to the energy on the field. Our commitment to getting out to as many games as we can to promote both the players and the teams remains unwavering, and will continue to happen up to and through that culminating week.

And it is because of that coverage, along with extensive research, that, in a year without a state champion, we feel compelled to release the first ever PBR Oregon High School (6A) Rankings. The modest Top 10 Power Rankings will be updated weekly with a focus on elevating the TEAMS that are at the head of the class, and will be dependent on results.

Cam Clayton (Lakeridge)

Grabbing the top spot in Week 1 is a Lakeridge club that holds a 6-0 record while out-scoring its opponents 61-6. The Pacers are led by MLB Draft hopefuls, ‘21 RHP George Eisenhardt (Xavier recruit) and ‘21 SS Cam Clayton (Washington recruit) along with a lineup that boasts five Pac-12 commits, and one of the deepest pitching staffs in the state.

Metro League rivals, Jesuit and Westview, come in at numbers two and three, respectively, eyeing a massive two game series Wednesday and Friday. The Crusaders may have lost a first round pick from their rotation (Mick Abel), but the program has reloaded, and might have gotten even better when looking at the depth of quality arms. The results have confirmed the highly-touted arsenal of the staff with a 6-0 record that includes just four runs allowed. As for Westview, which is led by the top prospect in the state, ‘21 INF Mason Guerra (Oregon State), the physicality of its lineup is imposing, and a threat to do damage against any arm.

Sprague and Grant stand at numbers four and five with unblemished, 6-0 records, but staring down big weeks. The Olympians have outscored opponents 50-11 in rising to be the top team in Salem. The Generals’ bats have carried them early to the tune of 84 runs in six games, and started the year with a big win over West Linn. They will be tested this week in a massive PIL battle against #10 Wilson who comes in with an undefeated record thanks to putting up 99 (!!!) runs in six games. Back-to-back after splitting two games are Clackamas (#6) and Barlow (#7). Each stole a game on the opponents home field, and holds nearly identical numbers. Barlow continues a tough early schedule with a road trip to 2019 6A runner-up, Central Catholic, before finishing the week against #4 Grant.
Sherwood dropped its first game of the year to #1 overall Lakeridge on a blustery day that was not ideal to be facing a MLB Draft arm (Eisenhardt), but has since reeled off five straight victories at a 53-5 scoring clip. The lineup is experienced with athletes all over the field.

At number nine, South Medford currently carries the torch for the Southwest Conference with a 4-1 record with the only blemish being a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Roseburg. The Panthers are staring down a big double-header on Saturday against North Medford.

So there you have it, the initial Oregon High School Top 10 Power Rankings. Be sure to check back each week as the PBR staff updates after the prior week’s matchups.
