Quick Hits - Future Stars Fall Showcase - Middle INF

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Last weekend we were at the pristine Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Complex for a 1 day event with 2024-2026 prospects from both Washington & Oregon.

The event featured a player workout in the morning with 60 times, batting practice and defensive evaluations. After that, we transitioned into a controlled scrimmage to pitchers could face off against live hitters.

PBR events events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future GamesJunior Future Games and West Coast Games

QUICK HITS

FUTURE STARS FALL SHOWCASE

MIddle INF

‘24 SS Gunnar Pedersen (Westview)
6-foot, 155 lbs with a wide frame that stretches out the jersey. Pedersen handles SS duties with a steady tempo and consistent actions. Funnels ball in from a wide base and lets it travel into his set-up. Exchange syncs up with footwork as he gets into a quick, short arm action. Offensively, starts tall before taking a low leg kick into landing. Uses the big parts of the field. Keeping hands inside of the ball and showing the ability to shoot it back up the middle. Approach translates well to the game & he was on the barrel in all of his live ABs.

‘24 SS Ethan Matsuoka (Tualatin)
Arguably the most physical offensive prospect at the event. Matsuoka already sports a mature, 6-foot, 185 lb frame and carries proportional strength in both his upper and lower half. His avg exit velocity of 91.85 mph led the event. His strength & bat speed should allow him to drive the ball to all parts of the field. On defense, he controls his glove hand well and utilizes his arm strength to his advantage. Stays behind the ball & gets plenty of momentum into his throws. Will head into the spring season as one of the top ‘24 prospects to keep an eye on.

‘25 SS Jon Caden Taylor (La Center, WA)
Taylor had a very productive performance as one of the youngest players at the event. With a lean, developing frame at 5-foot-9, 135 lbs, Taylor really maintains body control in all facets of the game and maximizes what he can get out of his size. Fields with sound, controlled actions on defense & handled all of his opportunities in-game. Offensively, his switch hitting ability makes him a consistent contact threat & he shows barrel control from both sides. Overall, has a really intriguing skill-set & looks poised to make a big jump as he continues to get stronger and mature.

‘24 SS Cade Wynn (Silverton)
Wiry athlete at 5-foot-9, 135 lbs. Wynn is one of the slickest, smooth fielding prospects we’ve seen early on in his class. Defensively he moves with short, crisp footwork and stays active while working through the play. Overall, very light on his feet & could easily handle multiple INF positions. Adjusts arm slot as needed. Offensively he puts a tight move on the ball as his upper half stays short & compact. Loose, early barrel action. Stays tall against a strong front side with some lift after contact. Hard nosed competitor in game.

‘25 SS Joe Fagan (Scappoose)
Long, lean frame with length at 5-foot-10, 145 lbs. At the plate, starts upright with a square set-up towards the pitcher. Stretches barrel back with a deep hand load as hips coil prior to short forward stride. Flat path into contact with a barrel that covers depth in the zone. Defensively, flashed promising actions for a youngster with some polish and feel for the SS position. Stays active while the ball approaches then gets into a wider set-up as he keeps working through the play. Short, compact arm action. Momentum stays behind the throw. Noticeable feel for the speed of the game.

‘24 SS Cal Zimmerman (Bellevue, WA)
Athletically built at 6-foot-1, 165 lbs with a sloped upper half and high-waisted frame. Has the size, speed and athleticism to stick in the middle of the diamond long-term. Has run well on multiple looks. Moves well laterally at SS while keeping a soft glove hand. Easy hip hinge to get down to the ball and stay balanced while fielding. Easy, loose arm action from lower slot. Offensively, shows a rhythmic load with slight hand movement that syncs with a low leg lift and forward stride. Loose barrel action into contact with slightly uphill path. High finish & leverage project well for additional power down the road.

‘24 SS Jackson Barnachea (Tigard)
Strong-framed at 6-foot-1, 175 lbs. Led the event in EV with a best of 97.05 while also being able to switch-hit. Shows a heavy barrel from the right side & consistently impacts the baseball. Hands stay tight and work inside of the ball. From the left-side, the barrel action is a bit more free and loose with a lofted approach to the ball. On defense, keeps momentum/rhythm as he works around the ball and comes thru the play. Avoids being stagnant or flat-footed. Quiet glove hand and consistent funnel into low ¾ release. Name to know in ‘24 class for the 2022 season.

‘24 SS Dustin Doherty (Jesuit)
6-foot, 175 lbs with an exciting blend of strength and speed that translates well to the game. Offensively, looks to do damage at the plate with an aggressive approach and some controlled violence in his barrel. Puts a quiet forward move on the ball then generates easy bat speed as he rotates into contact. Present gap-to-gap power with chance to really life the ball to his pull-side. Defensively, keeps a wide, athletic base with low hips and upright posture as the ball approaches. Quick exchange with short footwork into throwing motion. Compact arm path with momentum behind throw after release. Has potential to be a big riser in ‘24 class with a productive 2022 season.
