Here are some notes and video on a few players that our Mid-Atlantic staff got to see in Day 5 of the 17U National Championship at Lakepoint.
South Charlotte Panthers

Heath Andrews RHP / SS / James River (Buchanan), VA / 2023The last time we saw the NC State commit was July 2020 at Future Games in a very brief outing. Since that time Andrews has continued to add polish to the pitchability that he has offered for quite some time. The 6-foot-3 right hander was very efficient in the zone with his mostly fastball/slider mix. Used eleven pitches in the first sitting 91-93 mph with the four seamer and flashing his plus potential slider. Andrews got into a jam in the second, allowing three singles in a row to load the bases with nobody out. He then proceeded to dominate the next three hitters with primarily 79-82 mph sliders and struck out three without allowing a run. Andrews worked a 87-90 mph two-seamer that had gradual arm side run. However, the slider was the star of the show. Andrews struck out nine hitters, eight of them on sliders. The slider ranged in the mid-to-upper 2400's and got up as high as 2676 RPM. Flashed a third pitch, a 80-82 mph changeup, that he had average feel for. He did not get many swings and misses on the fastball and it seemed to play better off of the slider. With his ability to throw strikes consistently with two pitches, easy velo, and the quality of the slider, Andrews is becoming a name to know as we start to look at the 2023 draft class.

Garrett Mason RHP / OF / Mills Godwin , VA / 2023Mason opened up the day with a 90 mph fastball before settling in at 86-89 mph. He had a few outlying fastballs at 84-85 mph, but that was right after getting hit in the arm with a batted ball in the second. Showed some toughness battling back and was still holding 87-89 in the fifth inning. Mason leaned heavily on the 71-73 mph breaking ball in the middle innings. The curveball had above average spin, 12/6 shape, and could throw it for strikes at a pretty consistent clip. Mason has the physical makeup of a draft prospect, whether it is sooner or later will depend on the strides he takes over the next eight months.
