Additional Scouting Notes from Day Two (Traveling Saints vs. Pittsburgh Stealers)

The two day scout team series between the Traveling Saints coached by Dave Kirilloff and the Pittsburgh Stealers coached by former Duquesne baseball coach Mike Wilson moved to Allegheny College in Meadville, PA today.

A handful of players stood out on day two. Below is a brief synopsis of those players strengths:

Traveling Saints:

Ted Williams, 2B/SS (Meadville), ranked No. 36 in the Class of 2014
Williams had a stellar day in the field seeing time at 2B, SS and 3B. He turned a slick 5-3 DP early on from third base and turned in a solid defensive performance from 2B and SS as well on the afternoon. Williams reached base all five times he went to the plate, extending his string to seven times on base in seven plate appearances for the weekend series. Williams will be participating in both the Pennsylvania Underclass Top Prospect Games an Pennsylvania Top Prospect Games this fall.

Matt Clark, 2B/3B/SS (Pine Richland), Class of 2013
Clark had two hits on the day, including an RBI in the first inning that got the Saints rolling in their 11-4 win.

Matt Wilke, SS/2B (Chartiers Valley), Class of 2014
Wilke had a solid day in the field showing good footwork and a strong arm across the infield. The 6-foot, 160-pound middle infielder showed good range and soft hands in making a number of plays at multiple infield positions.

Connor McWilliams, C/3B (Brentwood), Class of 2015
McWilliams is an athletic catcher with good blocking and receiving skills. He has projectable size at 6-foot, 175-pounds. He shows promise at the plate as well. McWilliams is a catcher to watch in the Class of 2015.

Dylan Kugler, C (Serra Catholic), Class of 2013
Kugler is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound catcher who displayed excellent receiving and blocking skills. He showed a strong arm (76mph from the crouch) with a pop time of 2.08 in cutting down a would be base stealer.

Joel Shaffer, RHP (Central Catholic), Class of 2015
Shaffer was one of the more impressive prospects on the afternoon. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound pitcher used solid mechanics to top out at 81mph on his fastball that had late life. Shaffer also displayed an 11/5 breaking curve ball with tight rotation and a 68mph changeup with near fastball arm speed. Shaffer pounded the strike zone and challenged hitters. With continued growth Shaffer will continue to add velocity and will be a pitcher to watch in the Class of 2015.

Dustin Lander, LHP (Southside), Class of 2015
Lander has solid mechanics and an 82mph fastball with potential to see added velocity. He will need to develop some movement on his fastball which he throws from an over the top arm angle. His curveball sits 65-68 with good rotation. With work, the 6-foot, 160-pound left hander could develop into a quality arm in the Class of 2014.

Pittsburgh Stealers:

Mason Tillery, 2B/MIF (Trinity), Class of 2013
Tillery exhibited solid defensive actions and the ability to make all the plays from his second base position over the two days. Offensively he showcased a short stroke and consistently squared the baseball.

Shane Heim, OF (Pine Richland), Class of 2013
Heim showed some of the best power potential among all prospects over the two days. He has a solid approach at the plate and displayed good gap power. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound right handed hitter is solidly built and looks to be still growing.

Brad Gresock, C (Seneca Valley), Class of 2013
Gresock is a good looking athlete at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds. He blocks and receives well and displayed a 2.06 pop time on an 78mph throw that cut down a baserunner attempting to steal. Gresock hits out of a slightly crouched stance and exhibited the ability to square the baseball consistently.
