Bloomsburg University Announces 2014 Early Signing Class

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Bloomsburg University Head Coach Mike Collins received commitments from six prospects with two making up the Huskies' early signing class for 2014. According to Collins, "In addition to the two students who signed NLI's we received commitments from four additional critical guys. I am very pleased with all six commitments that we received."

Collins is unable to discuss the prospects that have committed, but yet to sign. He did however shed some light on the two that make up the early signing class.

2014 Early Commits

2B/SS Tyler Benson (Montville HS, NJ)

Montville vs. West Milford Baseball - May 10, 2013Benson is a 5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed hitting middle infielder from New Jersey. He hit .427 with eight doubles and 29 runs scored as a junior in 2013.

Collins' comments: "Tyler Benson had a great summer playing for the North Jersey Cardinals. He had a mature approach at the plate and showed advanced offensive skills for a high school hitter. He hits from the left side and is a good runner. Benson grinds out at bats, he is an excellent two-strike hitter, and he can bunt. He fits our system"

C Brandyn Smith (Cedar Cliff HS)

Brandyn SmithSmith showcased an 87 mph bat exit velocity at the PA Top Prospect Games in June. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter uses a leg lift trigger and a solid lower half to generate barrel whip and some gap power. Smith displayed the strongest catcher arm at the event at 79 mph out of the crouch with pop times of 2.00-2.09. He went 2-for-8 in game play during the course of the event.

Collins' comments: "Brandyn Smith has excellent tools in terms of arm-strength and power. I can't wait to work with him. He did a great job at our camp. He is a good athlete behind the plate. He is a physical hitter and should develop into a run producer in the middle of our lineup.
