C/1B Chris Melillo Commits to Notre Dame

                                   Chris Mellillo

It might be cliché, but Chris Melillo, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound C/1B, described his decision to attend Notre Dame as love at first sight. According to Melillo, "I just decided to attend school at Notre Dame University. I was at the campus for a camp and I fell in love with the school. It was a good fit for me both athletically and academically. A degree from Notre Dame really means a lot, it's a great degree. Notre Dame moving to the ACC was also a factor. It's one of the best conferences in the country and I'm excited to be playing in it."

Melillo, the No. 3 ranked player in the Class of 2013, was also looking at Duke, Boston College, Penn, Georgetown and George Washington. He will be attempting to lead his LaSalle College HS team to a repeat performance of the 2011 season when they won the PIAA AAAA State Championship.

During LaSalle Colleges 2011 run to a state title, Melillo was the everyday starter at first base. Melillo is a gifted catcher and feels he will have an opportunity to play both positions moving forward. "They want me to be versatile my freshman year and look at multiple positions. They may have a need for a first baseman or a catcher, and hopefully I'll get some playing time at both positions." Melillo went on to say, "I feel like my biggest strength is my ability to hit. I think I can provide Notre Dame with a solid bat in the lineup early in my career there with the ability to hit for power."

Melillo was the final player in the Top 10 of the Prep Baseball Report Class of 2013 rankings to commit. With his commitment, 29 of the top 35 players have now announced where they plan to play college baseball.

With his college choice checked off, Melillo now turns to the remaining items on the checklist for the final season of his high school career. He stated that, "This year, I'm looking to win my League MVP award and hopefully have an opportunity to have a shot at being named All-State. I feel like both of those goals are attainable for me. As a team, I'd really like to finish my senior year with a Catholic League Championship. Hopefully we'll also have a shot to repeat as State Champions."

Prep Baseball Report will be instituting a Pennsylvania All-State Team and a PBR Pennsylvania Player of the Year Award at the conclusion of the 2013 high school season. While Melillo will be just one of countless college commits vying to be the first player ever named PBR Player of the Year, he is definitely in the running as a pre-season candidate.
