Class of 2023 Inside the Rankings - Week 1: Helium Watch

Each week leading up to the new year, we will be rolling out “Inside the Rankings” articles to further highlight the movement around the ‘23 class in NY and PA. This week, our focus begins on “Helium Watch” candidates - players that have a good chance to take that next step and ascend up the rankings.

2023 SS/RHP James Kunst (Highlands)

The Spin: Physically fluid and mature at 6-foot-2, 190lbs, Kunst features an impressive two-way skillset with polish around the edges. The righty creates good separation on the bump with loose arm-action up to 88 mph, mixing in a trusted 71-73 mph CB with depth. The raw athleticism positively carries into all phases of the game, although he might see a slide over to a corner IF position down the road. Continued strides offensively have allowed him to gain traction with high-level rotational scores (31+ G’s) and quality bat-to-ball skills (78% on-plane efficiency via Blast Motion).

The Performance: Took a big step forward with a dominant trip to #PASelect back in mid-July, accruing multiple extra-base hits after a 5 inning shutout on the mound, ultimately earning a trip to the PBR Future Games for Team PA.
