Conference Preview: District 10 Class AA

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

With the start of the high school season getting started we have been previewing conferences around the state leading up to opening day. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each conference.

            district 10 Class AA

Preseason Favorite

Saegertown (19-3)

The current seniors at Saegertown have gown 57-8 in their high school careers and have won three consecutive District 10 titles. Although the Panthers lost SS Stephen Sada (Miami of Ohio) and RHP/3B Luke Carter (Waynesburg) to graduation, they return seven starters with significant post season experience and ample pitching to be the favorite to win a championship for a fourth consecutive year.

in the mix

West Middlesex (11-7), Sharpsville (15-6), Northwestern (15-6), Mercyhurst Prep (18-4)

While Saegertown has had a strangle hold on the district for the past three years, there are plenty of other talented teams that all feel they have what it takes to crown a new champion. If someone other than the Panthers is to take home the hardware in 2014 look for one of these four clubs to get the job done.

Preseason Co-Players of the Year

The Co-players of the Year are so similar that they sit at No. 35 (Porterfield) and No. 36 (Walters) in the PA Class of 2014 rankings. The two will stop knocking heads and combine forces following this spring as both have signed to play their college baseball at Slippery Rock.

Christian PorterfieldChristian Porterfield, West Middlesex HS (Class of 2014)

Porterfield showed the offensive skill set that made him one of the more coveted hitters in the PA Class of 2014 during the PA Top Prospect Games last June. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitter turned in the top bat exit velocity of the event at 96 mph. Porterfield went 4-for-7 with two doubles and five RBI during game play. He also showed improvement behind the plate with pop times of 1.97-2.10 on throws of 76 mph out of the crouch. Porterfield showcased the ability to play 3B, 1B and the outfield as well during game play.

Tyler WaltersTyler Walters, Saegertown HS (Class of 2014)

Walters is widely regarded as one of the top hitting catchers in the PA Class of 2014. The 6-1, 195-pound has put up prolific power numbers over three years in a Saegertown uniform and has displayed a bat exit velocity of 89 mph. Walters has worked hard to increase his arm strength and receiving. The senior showcased throws of 79 mph from the crouch and pop times of 1.94-2.00 at a PBR event in June.
