Conference Preview: WPIAL Class AAA - Section 2

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing conferences around the state leading up to opening day. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each conference.

WPIAL Class AAA - Section 2

Preseason Favorite

Indiana Area (14-5)

The Little Indians return all nine starters from last year's playoff team and a deep pitching staff. Indiana has its sights set on a section title and a deep run in the postseason, and rightfully so.

in the mix

Greensburg-Salem (7-10), Yough (10-12)

The Golden Lions have OF Maz Ponzurick, No. 5 in PA and No. 34 in the PBR combined Class of 2014 rankings. He has the ability to affect every game that Greensburg Salem plays

Yough returns 1st All-Section selection LHP CJ Vargo who was 7-1 for the Cougars in 2013.

Preseason co-Players of the Year

Sean ThompsonSean Thompson, Indiana Area (Class of 2014)

Thompson is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound RHP/OF that went 4-1 on the mound and hit .397 in 2013. The VCU recruit will sit in the upper 80s this spring and is likely to post some readings in the low 90s as well. Thompson also has command of his complimentary pitches making him that much tougher to hit. Thompson will be the ace of an extremely talented and deep Indiana Area pitching staff that makes them a favorite to win the section and to make a solid post season run.

Max PonzurickMax Ponzurick, Greensburg-Salem (Class of 2014)

Ponzurick is a rare athlete at 6-foot-3, 220-pounds. He runs a sub-7.0 60 yard dash and has a plus arm (90 mph IF, 94 mph OF). The Virginia Tech recruit has been turning heads around the country for several years with his tools (See Metropolitan Classic Preview). Ponzurick suffered through a couple of nagging injuries during his junior season but appears healthy and primed for one last trip through the WPIAL.
