Eastern PA College Prospect Showcase Analysis: Class of 2020

The summer schedule of PBR events in Pennsylvania continued this week with the 2016 Eastern PA Top College Prospect Showcase on June 29. Nearly 50 prospects from four states gathered to showcase their abilities at Maple Zone Sports in Aston, PA. Today we begin our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the prospects that participated in the Class of 2020.

Class of 202o

Anthony Bruno, 3B/OF, Hatboro-Horsham HS

5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a feel for the barrel during batting practice and registered a bat exit velocity of 65 mph. Ran an 8.64 60-yard dash displayed developing arm strength at third base and in the outfield. Athletic skill set will be bolstered through strength gains and physical maturity.

Derek Ferguson, SS/RHP, Central York HS

5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a bat exit velocity of 72 mph and ran a 7.69 60-yard dash. Two-way prospect displayed accurate 68 mph arm strength across the diamond and sat 68-70 out of a high 3/4 arm slot on the mound. Ferguson also commanded a 61 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 63 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed.

Eugene McGough, RHP, Central Bucks West HS

5-foot-11, 170-pound right-hander sat 74-77 from a 3/4 arm slot with solid command of his fastball. 66 mph spike curveball with 11/5 rotation showed tight break and will be a solid pitch for him moving forward. Also showed above average feel for his 71 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. Sound mechanics and athletic frame will likely lead to significant velocity gains in coming years.

Jared Minnichbach, 3B/RHP, Holy Ghost Prep HS 

6-foot-1, 190-pound two-way prospect has advanced physical size for a prospect his age. Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a toe-tap stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a feel for the barrel in BP with solid hands leading to a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. Registered a 7.57 60-yard dash and displayed accurate 74 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Right-hander sat 76-77 off the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot. Displayed good feel for a 64 mph curveball with some downward bite and a 70 mph changeup with solid arm speed.

Trent Pierce, C/OF, Archbishop John Carroll HS

5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and utilizes a short, lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Displayed solid feel for the baseball in BP with the ability to stay behind the baseball while using all fields. Registered a bat exit velocity of 79 mph and ran a 7.96 60-yard dash. Showcased 65 mph arm strength out of the crouch with a top pop time of 2.39 during defensive evaluations.

Deven Smith, RHP/3B, New Hope-Solebury HS

6-foot-2, 160-pound primary pitcher sat 73-75 from a 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action. Displayed solid command of three pitches including his fastball, a 62 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 67 mph changeup.

Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance with a high back elbow. Displayed average barrel whip (78 mph bat exit velocity) and the ability to barrel the baseball consistently in BP. Ran a 7.87 60-yard dash and displayed accurate 70 mph arm strength across the diamond during defensive workout.

Jacob Yurkovitch, SS/RHP, Notre Dame Green Pond HS

5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and generates a 77 mph bat exit velocity with limited lower half action. Displayed a feel for the barrel and some potential with greater incorporation of lower half. Ran a 7.43 60-yard dash and 62 mph arm strength across the diamond. Right-hander sat 67-68 with a sidearm delivery on the mound. Also displayed a 57 mph slider and a 58 mph changeup as secondary offerings.
