Eastern PA Top Prospect Games Analysis: Red Team

The schedule of PBR events in Pennsylvania moved to the eastern half of the state with the 2019 Eastern PA Top Prospect Games on June 18th and 19th. Prospects gathered for two days of games and showcase activities at the Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim. Today we begin our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at those that participated as a member of the Red Team.

Robert BuckleyCaleb SturtevantAndrew Whinney

Robert Buckley, 2020, OF/1B, Roman Catholic HS (PA)
5-foot-10, 175-pound left-handed hitter showcased an advanced approach at the plate while making consistent hard contact over the course of the two-day event. He starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a short leg-hang stride. Showed above average balance and rhythm to his swing with an ability to create backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Ran a 7.27 60-yard dash and displayed accurate 75 mph arm strength from the outfield while playing through the baseball consistently. Also showed the ability to handle defensive duties at first base.

Caleb Sturtevant, 2022, OF, Cocalico HS (PA)
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter continued to showcase the well-rounded skill set that has him among top outfield prospects in his class statewide. He starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a quiet, lift-and-replace stride. Showcased advanced feel for the barrel with a middle of the field approach and a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. Ran a 6.71 60-yard dash and flashed 90 mph arm strength from the outfield. 

Andrew Whinney, 2021, C/RHP, Central Bucks East HS (PA)
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a controlled leg-hang stride. Displayed the ability to stay behind the baseball with solid feel for the barrel and a bat exit velocity of 87 mph. Showcased advanced receiving, blocking and throwing skills behind the plate. Registered pop times of 2.05-2.13 on throws of 74 mph from the crouch with very quick, clean feet. Exceptional student has already scored 35 (ACT) and 1530 (SAT) with two years of high school remaining.

Ryan Davis, 2022, 1B/OF, Malvern Prep (PA)
6-foot, 190-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a leg-hang stride to begin. Showcased an advanced feel for the barrel with current pull side power. Consistently drove the baseball during batting practice and registered a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. Only participated on day one of the event. Davis will participate in the PBR Future Games as a member of Team Pennsylvania in August.

Kevin Small, 2020, 1B/LHP, Downingtown West HS (PA)
6-foot-1, 205-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square, slightly crouched stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed balance throughout with a feel for the barrel and the ability to create some backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 86 mph. The lefty sat 82-84 from an over-the-top arm slot while repeatedly getting downhill. Fastball showed some cut action and a curveball with 1/7 rotation works out of the same window with significant late break. Also displayed a feel for a changeup with some arm-side run at 72-74. 

Eddie Smink, 2022, RHP, West Chester Henderson HS (PA)
5-foot-11, 195-pound primary pitchers sat 84-85 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Repeats well and utilizes his lower half extremely well to create late life to his fastball. Showed above average feel for a curveball at 62-66 with tight 11/5 rotation. Changeup at 69-70 with similar arm speed gives Smink three above average pitches to work with at an early age. A strong, projectable frame should allow Smink to add significant velocity in the coming years.

Jake Arnold, 2020, RHP, Lower Dauphin HS (PA)
6-foot-2, 175-pound righty sat 81-82, down from the 85-87 we saw him sitting in the winter. Repeats his delivery well with balance throughout. Commanded his curveball at 66-69 with tight 11/5 rotation. Also mixed in an occasional changeup at 75-76.

Gabe Bunn, 2021, SS/RHP, Wilson West Lawn HS (PA)
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to start. Displayed balance throughout with a feel for the barrel and a line drive approach. Registered a bat exit velocity of 79 mph and ran a 7.28 60-yard dash. Showcased active feet while consistently playing through the baseball with 81 mph arm strength across the diamond. The righty sat 78-79 out of a high 3/4 arm slot on the mound. Pounds the zone and repeats his delivery with consistency. Curveball showed 11/5 rotation at 65-66 and also showed a feel for his changeup at 71-72.

Cam Eberly, 2021, SS/OF, Manheim Central HS (PA)
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a closed stance and initiates his swing with a quick, leg-lift stride. Showcased a feel for the barrel and a short swing path while registering a bat exit velocity of 79 mph. Ran a 6.75 60-yard dash and active feet defensively with accurate 81 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Isaac Frye, 2021, OF, Souderton Area HS (PA)
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a leg-hang stride. Displayed a feel for the baseball with a middle of the field approach while registering a bat exit velocity of 85 mph. Only participated on day one of the event.

Ian Korn, 2021, RHP, York Suburban HS (PA)
5-foot-10, 165-pound primary pitcher sat 79-82 from a high 3/4 arm slot with natural cut action to his fastball. Repeats his delivery well and stays inline with a feel for three pitches. Curveball at 65-67 showed tight 11/5 rotation and was thrown for strikes in all counts. Displayed above average feel for his changeup at 75-77 with heavy cut. Understands how to pitch and uses all three pitches with confidence.

Evan Krall, 2022, SS/3B, Cedar Crest HS (PA)
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel-raise stride. Displayed a feel for the barrel with limited lower half rotation to his swing. Registered a bat exit velocity of 83 mph and ran a 7.34 60-yard dash. Showcased developing defensive actions with accurate 76 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Wyatt Lamb, 2022, C/3B, Mt. Calvary Christian School (PA)
6-foot-1, 170-pound switch-hitter displayed a well-rounded skill set with a projectable frame over two days of action. Showed similar swings from both sides of the plate starting from a slightly open stance and initiating his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Registered a bat exit velocity of 81 mph and ran a 7.56 60-yard dash. Showcased pop times of 2.28-2.35 on throws of 68 mph from the crouch defensively. The righty sat 72-74 on the mound out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Working solely out of the stretch, he also displayed a curveball with 11/5 rotation at 62-63.

Matt Wallace, 2020, RHP/OF, Donegal HS (PA)
5-foot-9, 165-pound primary pitcher sat 73-76 out of a high 3/4 arm slot while repeating his delivery with regularity. Showcased an effective curveball/slider combination that were used to keep hitters off balance. The curveball at 62-64 showed two-plane 11/5 rotation while the slider had shorter break at 66-68. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel-raise stride. Displayed a line drive approach with a feel for the barrel and a bat exit velocity of 87 mph. Played through the baseball routinely with 81 mph arm strength from the outfield and ran a 6.94 60-yard dash.

Joey Wileczek, 2021, SS, West Chester East HS (PA)
5-foot-6, 150-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a leg-hang stride. Displayed a feel for the barrel with a bat exit velocity of 86 mph. An above average runner with a soft glove hand and solid arm strength, Wileczek did not have an opportunity to participate on day two of the event.
