Elite Prospect Showcase Analysis: Class of 2017 Outfielders

By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

The 2015 Elite Prospect Showcase took place Saturday, November 7th at Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA with 75 prospects from four states displaying their skills. Today we continue our analysis of all prospects in attendance by reviewing outfielders in the class of 2017.

A 6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed hitter, Northwestern Lehigh's Tyler Schreiner showed improved measureables across the board (6.81 60-yard dash, 86-mph exit velocity, 77-mph arm strength) from when he last attended an event. He starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square, working down into the zone from a good launch point and keeping his head still. Defensively, he showcased athletic actions with a clean arm action and throws that traveled true.

Nick Amey, OF, Emmaus
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a square stance with short stride, keeping his head and body quiet throughout his swing. Lays bat flat at launch, but barreled the baseball during his BP round with a peak exit velocity of 81-mph, mostly to the pullside. Ran a 7.47 60-yard dash and recorded 75-mph arm strength.

Brett Foulke, OF, Notre Dame Green Pond
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a slightly open stance with minimal stride, keeping his head and body quiet throughout his swing. A barrel wrap creates some length, although he did flash some bat speed with an 82-mph exit velocity. Ran a 7.17 60-yard dash and recorded 69-mph arm strength.

Devon Garner, OF, Daniel Boone
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides to slightly open. Got his hands to a good launch position, kept his head still, took a fairly short path, and barreled the baseball during his BP round. Showed some ability to drive the baseball (90-mph exit velocity) and ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. Defensively, his throws from an over-the-top slot travel true with peak arm strength of 79-mph.

Maxx Harpalani, OF/RHP, Pine-Richland
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from a square stance with body that drifts forward some with his stride. Showed a repeatable swing in which he works down into the zone and stays through contact, with the ability to barrel the ball to all fields in BP. Ran a 7.27 60-yard dash and posted a peak exit velocity of 88-mph. Defensively, his throws of 87-mph had good carry to them.

Mitchel Hoon, RHP/OF, Cumberland Valley
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Primary pitcher (who showed well on the mound) hits from a slightly open stance and strides to square with some top half dive over home plate. Hides his hands a bit in his load which can create some length in his swing. Ran a 7.23 60-yard dash and posted an 86-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he moved well and recorded 88-mph arm strength.

Frankie Montecalvo, OF, Bishop Guilfoyle
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter who continues to post strong measureables. Starts from an open stance and takes a knee-to-knee stride to slightly open. Compensates for a barrel wrap and hitch with very good bat speed (90-mph exit velocity). Barreled the baseball throughout his BP round. Ran a 6.68 60-yard dash and recorded 83-mph arm strength.

Chase Smith, OF, Central
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter. With strength sapped due to a three-day illness prior to the event, Smith wasn't quite at peak performance on this day. Measureables were still solid (7.11 60-yard dash, 76-mph arm strength, 84-mph exit velocity), although short of what he has previously shown (6.92 60, 80-mph arm, 87-mph exit). Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to a narrow, square base that causes him to spin. Vertical barrel in the strikezone, but has really strong forearms and the ball jumps off his bat.

Drew Swire, OF/LHP, Brandywine Heights
6-foot-1, 150-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square. Stayed inside the ball with some length to his swing, which should improve as he adds strength to his frame. Ran a 7.11 60-yard dash and posted an 81-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he moved well and posted 81-mph arm strength.
