Elite Prospect Showcase: Catcher Analysis

The Elite Prospect Showcase took place on October 26th at Keystone State Baseball Academy giving our staff a final look this fall at some of the top prospects in Pennsylvania. Today we continue a series of articles analyzing the prospects in attendance with a look at those players that participated as catchers.

Catcher Analysis

James Germosen, Olney Charter HS, 2023
5-foot-7, 150-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance & initiates his swing from a lift-and-replace stride. Showcase balance throughout with a feel for the barrel and some length to his swing. Registered a bat exit velocity of 85 mph and ran a 7.51 60-yard dash. Polished receiver for his age flashed pop times of 2.25-2.38 on throws of 68 mph out of the crouch. Definite follow in this class with all the tools to be a highly recruited prospect behind the dish.

Ian Hubbard, Jim Thorpe Area HS, 2021
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a short leg hang stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a feel for the barrel while routinely creating backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 84 mph and ran a 7.44 60-yard dash. Showcased quick feet and a quick transition behind the plate with pop times of 2.09-2.18 on throws of 76 mph from the crouch. Junior still has room to add strength to his athletic frame.

Nate Kinsey, Bishop McDevitt HS, 2022
Physical 6-foot-1, 198-pound switch hitter showcased similar swings from both sides of the plate with a bit longer swing path and more present power from is dominant left hand side. He starts from a square stance and and initiates his hands with a quiet lift-and-replace stride. Hands work well through contact from the left side creating routine backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 87 mph and ran a 7.40 60-yard dash. Solid receiver displayed quick feet and straight line carry on throws of 72 mph from the crouch with pop times of 2.08-2.16.

Matthew Martinez, Bethlehem Catholic HS, 2021
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a heel-raise stride to initiate his swing. Showcased a direct swing path with above average strength in his lower half. Registered a bat exit velocity of 87 mph and ran a 7.50 60-yard dash. Fundamentally sound behind the plate with solid straight line carry on throws of 76 mph from the crouch with pop times of 2.06-2.13.

Luis Melendez, Exeter Township HS, 2020
5-foot-5, 195-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a short, lift-and-replace stride. Showcased above average strength in his lower half with a balanced, line drive approach. Registered a bat exit velocity of 85 mph and ran a 7.77 60-yard dash. Sound defender receives well and is efficient in his movements. Showcased pop times of 2.12-2.19 on throws of 72 mph from the crouch.

Jonathan Myers, Boyertown Area HS, 2021
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a quick, lift-and-replace stride. Stays behind the baseball well with a line drive approach. Registered a bat exit velocity of 82 mph and ran a 7.40 60-yard dash. Displayed a soft glove hand and accurate throws behind the dish with pop times of 2.18-2.32 on throws of 71 mph from the crouch.

Jack Palowicz, Pittsburgh Central Catholic HS, 2021
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to begin. Showcased a feel for the barrel with a gap-to-gap approach. Registered a bat exit velocity of 89 mph and ran a 7.46 60-yard dash. Displayed fundamentally sound actions defensively with solid 74 mph arm strength out of the crouch and pop times of 2.21-2.27.

Damaurys Rodriguez, Wilson West Lawn HS, 2020
5-foot-10, 180-pound switch hitter starts from a slightly open stance from the left side and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride while creating backspin. Starts from a square stance from the right side and showcased plenty of quick twitch actions with a solid hip turn. Registered an event best bat exit velocity of 94 mph and ran an event best 6.72 60-yard dash. Flashed the top defensive skill set of all catchers in attendance with advanced 82 mph arm strength with carry and pop times of 1,87-1.95.

Thomas Sheridan, Tunkannock Area HS, 2022
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and utilizes a short leg hang stride to begin. Showcased a long, loose swing with above average barrel whip. Registered a bat exit velocity of 84 mph and ran a 6.90 60-yard dash. Flashed above average 78 mph arm strength out of the crouch with pop times of 2.04-2.12 defensively. Definite follow in this class with athleticism in a physical frame and room to add additional strength.

Andres Suarez, Freedom HS, 2022
5-foot-9, 176-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a controlled leg-hang stride. Displayed present power with an ability to create backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 93 mph and ran a 7.27 60-yard dash. Polished receiver flashed quick feet and a quick transition with pop times of 2.05-2.12 on throws of 78 mph from the crouch. Advanced all around skill set makes Suarez one of the top catching prospects in this class statewide.

Patrick Sullivan, Cathedral Prep HS, 2022
6-foot, 155-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showcased balance throughout with a high finish and a feel for the barrel. Registered a bat exit velocity of 83 mph and ran a 7.40 60-yard dash. Displayed advanced throwing actions behind the plate getting to his front side and downhill with routinely on accurate throws of 75 mph out of the crouch with pop times of 2.07-2.20.
