Fall College Prospect Program: Top Pitching Performances

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The 2014 Fall College Prospect Program wrapped up action on Sunday with a date at Widener University. Over the span of September prospects displayed their talents in showcase activities and game play on three college campuses. Following is a look at the top position player performances over the course of the program.

top pitching performances

Eric Ford, RHP, Cambria Heights HS, PA (2015)

Ford displayed the best fastball of the day sitting 83-84 while touching 85 mph on several occasions during Week One action. The uncommitted senior worked quickly and effectively during his three innings of work utilizing a 67 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation as his secondary pitch of choice. At 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, Ford has a frame that projects to continue to develop. He has some hitches in his high 3/4 delivery that make him deceiving and his fastball showed late life especially up in the zone. Ford's performance is likely to draw some interest from schools still in search of quality arms in the 2015 class.

Dom Coconcelli, LHP, Penn-Trafford HS, PA (2016)

Coconcelli worked three scoreless innings during Week One with four strikeouts and five ground ball outs, not allowing a baseball to leave the infield. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound lefty sat 82-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot while touching 84 mph. Coconcelli, currently ranked No. 41 in the PA Class of 2016, also flashed a sharp biting 72 mph curveball that has occasional two-plane action. The junior works solely out of the stretch and displayed sound, repeatable mechanics with a clean arm action. Coconcelli has added 4-5 mph to his fastball in the past year and gives every sign that additional velocity spikes are still likely.

Colin Claus, RHP, West Allegheny HS, PA (2015)

Claus has been down in velocity most of the summer and fall from his peak when he sat 85-86 late in the spring, but continues to be extremely effective. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound righty sat 80-81 from a 3/4 arm slot with solid command of three pitches during Week Two action. Claus struck out five using his 71 mph slider and an occasional 73 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Claus allowed one run on two hits and showed command of all four quadrants of the plate. Two days following the completion of his outing Claus announced his commitment to play his college baseball at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).

Jeff Dixon, RHP, Cherry Hill West HS, NJ (2015)

Dixon got touched up for six hits in three innings of work, but his arm works and his fastball topped at 88 mph. The 6-foot-3, 160-pound uncommitted senior has plenty of room to add to his frame and his 72 mph curveball shows definite out potential. Although his 78 mph changeup and curveball showed promise, Dixon utilized his fastball that sat 85-88 roughly 90 percent of the time.

Rob Brown, LHP, Penncrest HS, PA (2015)

Brown sat 80-82 from a 3/4 arm slot with arm side run to his fastball. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound uncommitted lefty also mixed a 69 mph curveball with 1/7 shape and a sharp breaking slider at 73 mph. Brown worked quickly and pounded the strike zone registering five strikeouts, including all three hitters in his final inning of work.
