Fall Measurables and Evaluation Showcase: Catcher Analysis

The Fall Measurables & Evaluation Showcase took place on November 2nd at Keystone State Baseball Academy giving our staff a final look this fall at prospects from three states. Today we continue a series of articles analyzing the prospects in attendance with a look at those players that participated as catchers.

Catcher Analysis

Jack Filograna, Malvern Prep, 2023
5-foot-6, 135-pound right-handed hitter starts from a wide, square stance and initiates his swing with a leg lift stride. Showcased a direct swing path with a solid lower half and a feel for the barrel with a bat exit velocity of 74 mph. The freshman backstop showcased sound fundamentals behind the dish with pop times of 2.38-2.43 and developing 63 mph arm strength out of the crouch. 

Cooper Fiore, Pottsgrove HS, 2021
5-foot-8, 165-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a heel-raise stride. Displayed a flat bat path with the ability to create some backspin while consistently barreling the baseball with authority. Registered a bat exit velocity of 86 mph and ran a 7.12 60-yard dash. Showcased a quiet glove hand and quick feet with a clean transition behind the plate. Registered pop times of 2.15-2.25 on throws of 70 mph out of the crouch and also flashed athletic actions in the outfield with 79 mph arm strength.

Anthony Manzi, Newburgh Free Academy (NY), 2022
5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Showcased a flat barrel path with a line drive, middle of the field approach. Registered a bat exit velocity of 83 mph and ran a 7.94 60-yard dash. Displayed pop times of 2.25-2.33 on throws of 68 mph out of the crouch defensively. Work to stay directional in transition would improve arm strength and lower current pop times.

Owen McCarthy, West Chester Henderson HS, 2022
5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to begin. Showcased an aggressive lower half with some lower half glide with a feel for the barrel. Registered a bat exit velocity of 84 mph and ran a 7.35 60-yard dash. Showcased pop times of 2.21-2.29 on throws of 70 mph out of the crouch. Solid frame and actions with a well round skill set for a player his age.

Brendan Raven, Neshaminy HS, 2022
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a wide, square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showcased a feel for the barrel with a gap-to-gap approach. Registered a bat exit velocity of 82 mph and ran an 8.26 60-yard dash. Displayed promise behind the plate with sound, athletic actions and pop times of 2.16-2.27 on throws of 69 mph out of the crouch.

Dylan Shank, Lenape HS (NJ), 2022
5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed hitter took one of the best rounds of batting practice at the event. Starts from a square stance and utilizes a short, lift-and-replace stride to begin. Stays behind the baseball well and showed strength in his forearms with the ability to create backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 81 mph and ran a 7.50 60-yard dash. Showcased 71 mph arm strength out of the crouch defensively with pop times of 2.28-2.35.

Jackson Shollenberger, Notre Dame Green Pond HS, 2022
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitter starts from a wide, square stance and initiates his swing with significant lower half glide in his stride. Displayed some length in his swing with a feel for the barrel while routinely creating backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 83 mph and ran a 6.85 60-yard dash. Athletic defender in a physical frame. Displayed the top pop times of all catchers in attendance at 2.07-2.15 on throws of 74 mph from the crouch. Frame has room to fill out and add strength moving forward.

Michael Storti, St. Joseph's Prep, 2022
5-foot-11, 166-pound right-handed hitter starts from a narrow, square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his hands from a low load position. Showcased loose hands and a feel for the barrel. Registered a bat exit velocity of 82 mph and ran a 7.90 60-yard dash. Flashed pop times of 2.25-2.33 on throws of 75 mph from the crouch defensively. 

Carl Wagner, Westtown School, 2023
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a narrow, open stance and initiates his swing with a short leg-lift stride. Showcased the ability to stay behind the baseball with a line drive approach. Registered a bat exit velocity of 74 mph and ran a 7.78 60-yard dash. Showcased developing 69 mph arm strength and pop times of 2.21-2.30 defensively.
