Game Recap: Coatesville at Downingtown West

By Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

downingtown West 7, Coatesville 1

Downingtown West got a 1st inning two-run home run from catcher Nick Campana (2-2, HR, BB, 3 RBI) and erupted for five late runs to break open a tight ball game.  The Whippets won going away by tacking on three runs in the 5th and two more in the 6th to move to 12-3 on the season.

Early on it appeared that the game would be decided by the pitchers.  Coatesville starter Adam Stauffer, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound St. John's recruit ranked No. 16 in the PA Class of 2017, was in complete control with the exception of an elevated fastball that Campana deposited over the fence in the bottom of the 1st inning.  Stauffer cruised through the next 3.2 innings registering five strikeouts while yielding just two hits.  Things changed in the 5th inning of a 2-1 game when Stephen Posner hit a one out double.  Four of the next five Whippets hitters reached base with Campana, Drew Britt and Dylan DiRocco delivering run scoring singles.

Britt, ranked No. 35 in the PA Class of 2018, allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the 4th inning and nothing more.  The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander went the distance allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out seven.  Coatesville did not advance a runner into scoring position in any other inning.
