Game Recap: Lampeter-Strasburg at Manheim Central

By Greg Williams

Lampeter-Strasburg arrived in Manheim yesterday sporting a 13-6 overall record, having won eight of their past 10 games.  The Barons (15-4) turned what on paper looked like a quality late-season inter-division match-up into a laugher as they walked away with an 11-1 mercy-rule win in five innings.

The Barons got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when senior outfielder Frank Bowman (right) hit his first of two doubles on the night with one out. Bowman scored with two outs on an infield error. The lead was short-lived as L-S answered right back when senior Brandon Nickel doubled to begin the inning and scored on an errant throw as he swiped third base.

Manheim Central used nine hits and five walks in innings three through five to plate 10 runs to end the game with nobody out in the fifth inning. Bowman was the offensive star going 4-for-4 with four runs scored out of the two hole. The lefty stick doubled in each of his first two plate appearances and then executed textbook push bunts for singles in his final two plate appearances.

Sophomore righty Chad Neely went the distance scattering six hits for the win. He did not walk a batter and struck out two in a workmanlike performance.  Nickel and senior Cameron Enck led the L-S offense with two hits each.

Both teams will begin Lancaster Lebanon League playoffs on Saturday at Ephrata HS. Manheim's work is not yet complete however, as they now have a date with Donegal on Thursday to determine the Section Three title.
