Game of the Day: Elk County Catholic at DuBois Central Catholic

In a match-up between our projected top two teams in District IX Class A, Elk County Catholic picked up a 2-1 road win over DuBois Central Catholic behind a combined six-hitter from Ross Brennan and Dan Singer.

Dan SingerThe Crusaders tallied both runs in the top of the third inning. A single and outfield error put Ryan Heary on second base to lead off the inning, from where he would come around to score on a misplayed sacrifice bunt.  Three batters later, Singer singled home the second run before Cardinals starter Philip Myers limited the damage on a comebacker to the mound and a strikeout. From there on, ECC only had three baserunners against Myers (4 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 K) and reliever Ryan Anderson (3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K).

DCC had chances to score early against Brennan (6 IP, 5 H, 4 BB, 5 K), including three straight walks that loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, as well as one-out doubles that put a runner in scoring position in the second and fourth frames. The Cardinals cut the deficit in half in the fifth, on a two-out RBI single from Jake Miknis.  One final opportunity was waylaid by Singer (right) in the seventh, as he stranded a runner on second base to end the ballgame and pick up his first save of the season.
