The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia kicked into high gear over the past 10 days with the PA Top Prospect Games (June 17-18), Shenandoah Valley College Prospect Showcase (June 23) and the PA Underclass Games (June 24-25) offering college coaches a glimpse at some 175 prospects in a short period of time.

Over the course of the coming week we will analyze the prospects that performed by position. Today we take a look at the corner infielders that participated in the PA Underclass Games.

PA Underclass Games

Top Prospect

Charlie Varriano3B Charlie Varriano (Hempfield Area), 2017

Varriano showcased advanced offensive abilities from the right side of the plate going 3-for-6 with a double and a triple in game play during the course of the two day event. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound 3B/OF displayed loose hands and a direct path to the baseball out of a square stance with a bat exit velocity of 86 mph. Varriano flashed some gap power with both extra base hits traveling to the wall in left center field.

The sophomore ran a 7.51 60-yard dash and displayed a soft glove hand at 3B with developing arm strength. Varriano showcased the ability to make all plays with throws of 78 mph across the diamond. As he continues to develop physically Varriano will be a high follow among corner infielders in the PA Class of 2017.

Best of the Rest (alphabetical)

Baughman took one of the top rounds of batting practice at the event barreling the baseball to both gaps with a quiet load and a very strong lower half. The physical 6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed hitting freshman registered an 88 mph bat exit velocity and although he struggled a bit against older pitchers in game play he did show his power potential with a double to the right center field gap on day two. Elmquist is a 5-foot-8, 150-pound right-handed hitter that utilized a lift and replace stride foot from a square stance during his round of batting practice. The sophomore barreled the baseball frequently with a tendency to pull the bat head through the zone. His 69 mph bat exit velocity should see marked improvement as his frame continues to fill out. Elmquist is a 3B/1B that displayed a 68 mph arm across the diamond from 1B in defensive workouts.

Shultz displayed two-way abilities with an 80 mph arm across the infield from 3B and a fastball topping at 76 mph from the mound. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound junior had a solid two days at the plate.
