PIAA State Championships Wrap-up

Two extra inning games highlighted the culmination of the 2014 PIAA baseball season. Following is a recap of all four title games that led to the crowning of four new "State Champions".


Class AA:
  Loyalsock Township 5, Central 1

The Lancers got a complete game performance from 2015 RHP Kyle Datres and timely hitting in two innings to top Central for a 2nd Class AA title in two years. Datres also led his team's offense with a 3-for-3 performance with a walk and two runs scored. 2015 OF Jimmy Webb went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI to support Datres out of the two-hole in the Lancer's lineup.

2015 RHP Mike Mock battled for six innings keeping the Dragons in the ball game while working out of several jams. 

Loyalsock Township will now begin preparations for a run at a three-peat in 2015 with much of the starting lineup from the past two seasons returning.


Class AAAA: La Salle 4, Conestoga 2 (8 innings)

It took an extra inning but La Salle walked away with its 2nd Class AAAA title in three years following a two-run single from Brian Buckley in the top of the 8th inning. Dominic Cuoci went seven strong innings for the win before John Scheffey came on to record a scoreless 8th inning for the save.

La Salle opened the scoring when Cuoci drove in a run with a two out single in the 1st inning. 2015 OF Jimmy Herron's sacrifice fly in the 3rd pushed the lead to 2-0 before Conestoga answered with a single run in the 3rd and a tying run in the 5th on a single from SS Tommy Richter.

Both teams worked out of potential game ending jams in the 7th inning before the Explorers put together a two run 8th inning on three hits and a walk.

2015 LHP Brendan Little, who sat 90-92, for the majority of the game kept his team in the game until leaving following a walk to lead off the top of the 8th inning.


Class A: Devon Prep 2, Elk County Catholic 1 (9 innings)

Following a one hour rain delay and  nine full innings of baseball Devon Prep won the 2nd extra inning affair of the day 2-1 over the Crusaders to take home the Class A title.

Tide CF Chris Bauers stole third and raced home with the winning run following an errant throw for the win. Elk County Catholic starter Brandon Schlimm and Devon Prep starter Pat Rohr did not factor in the final decision but turned in impressive outing leading to the game advancing to extra frames.


Class AAA: Pope John Paul ii 4, Harriton 2

Luke DeLeo's RBI triple snapped a sixth-inning deadlock to lead Pope John Paul II to a 4-2 win over Harrtion for the Class AAA state title. The two teams advanced to the the title game following a 3-2 PJP win ove the Rams in the District I title game. Dan Zurowski got the win in a game that did not end until 11:40 p.m. following a rain delay and two extra inning games played earlier in the day.
