Pitchers Impress at the Eastern PA Top Prospect Showcase

By Greg Williams

The Prep Baseball Report Eastern PA Top Prospect Showcase on August 22 featured an impressive group of prospects from the east side of the state. The day got off to a fantastic start with 10 pitchers displaying their talents on the mound at the In the Net complex in Palmyra, PA.

Several pitchers showed extremely well but the most impressive performance was turned in by Zach Wielgus (Willliam Penn Charter), Class of 2015. Wielgus is not currently ranked in his class, but that will change shortly. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound left handed pitcher topped out at 84mph with more in the tank. He also showed a sharp breaking 73mph curve ball and a 73mph changeup that has good arm side run and late sink. Wielgus showed control of all three pitches and advanced mechanics for a pitcher his age. Wielgus is a very solid candidate to be a member of the 2013 Team Pennsylvania roster for the Midwest Future Games.

A look at the top pitchers at the event by class:

Luke Lingle (Lower Dauphin) showcased the ability to throw four pitches for strikes consistently. His fastball topped at 78mph and his curveball sat 60-62. However, it was his 69mph changeup that had good late downward action and his 68mph cutter that has hard late break that make him an interesting prospect. At 6-foot-3, 190-pounds Lingle has a good upside and room to continue to develop.

Scott Snyder (Blue Mountain) topped out at 76mph from a high 3/4 left handed delivery. Snyder consistently was down in the zone and his fastball had a bit of late cut. He also showed a 66mph curveball with a tight 1/7 break to go along with a 71mph changeup that had some ard side run.

Robert Gerofsky (Warwick) topped out at 75mph from a high 3/4 arm slot. Gerofsky also displayed a 59mph curve ball and a 64mph changeup that he kept down in the zone with a near fastball arm speed.

Michael Adams (Cumberland Valley) showed a great deal of promise and projects as a potential power pitcher at the next level. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound RHP/1B topped out at 84mph with a heavy fastball. Adams has excellent mechanics that are repeatable. He also showcased control of a 66mph curveball, a 72mph changeup with arm side run and a 72mph slider. His curveball has good 1/7 rotation and could become an out pitch with additional work.

Scott Bean (Lake Lehman) had a solid workout on the hill. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound right hander topped out at 79mph with his fastball with an over the top delivery. Bean drops to a 3/4 arm action for a 70mph slder and 72mph changeup that shows good downward movement. Bean uses a high leg kick and hides the ball well. With a 3/4 arm angle on his fastball he would have three pitches out of the same delivery and would gain added movement as opposed to the over the top arm slot.

Zach Newmyer (Red Land) utilized a long, loose high 3/4 arm slot to get hard, late arm side run on his 78mph fast ball. He also showcased a 65mph curveball with 10/4 rotation and a 70mph changeup with some run. Newmyer displayed control of all three pitches and the promise of added velocity as he adds to his 6-foot, 175-pound frame.

Tyler Potutschnig (Glendale) is an athletic 5-foot-10, 165-pound 3B/RHP that topped at 78mph out of an over the top arm slot. His curveball had an 11/5 break with tight rotation at 67mph. Potutschnig also displayed a solid 66mph changeup with good arm side run.

Evan Myers (Pope John Paul II) is a strike throwing machine with solid mechanics. Myers delivered strike after strike out of a high 3/4 arm slot topping at 74mph with his fastball, 67mph on his 10/4 breaking curveball and 66mph on his changeup with late arm side run.

Gabriel Witmer (Twin Valley) showed very good promise for a pitcher his age. Witmer is a 5-foot-8, 145-pound OF/RHP who should add velocity to his 77mph fastball in the years to come. He uses his body well to get out over his front leg. Witmer also showcased a 65mph changeup that he also threw consistently for strikes.
