Preseason All-State Showcase: Pitcher Analysis (Class of 2015)

A total of 44 pitchers toed the rubber on Day Two of the Preseason All-State Showcase. To complete our evaluations of those that participated we will take a look at 30 pitchers from the Class of 2015.

Dylan Bates, RHP, Towanda HS, Class of 2015
Bates is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior that sat 77-79 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. The righty also displayed an 11/5 breaking curveball that topped at 71 mph and a 74 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed that showed some arm side run. Bates showed repeatable mechanics and remained in the strike zone throughout his bullpen session.

Ryan Bonfanti, RHP, Easton Area HS, Class of 2015
Bonfanti sat 76-78 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with command of his fastball. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound righty also showcased a 70 mph curveball that had slider action and a 74 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed that showed some arm side run. 

Tyler Bonner, RHP, Avon Grove HS, Class of 2015
Bonner sat 78-82 from a high 3/4 arm slot with an overhead rocker delivery. His 72 mph 11/5 breaking curveball showed tight rotation and late biting action. Bonner also displayed a 71 mph slider and a 73 mph changeup with some cutting action.

John Bowman, RHP, Canton HS, Class of 2015
Bowman was significantly down in velocity for good reason having competed in a district wrestling tournament the day before. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound righty was noticeably lighter than when we saw him 85-87 in September. On this day Bowman sat 77-81 while also commanding a 69 mph changeup.  

Casey Brown, RHP, Easton Area HS, Class of 2015
Brown sat 77-79 out of a high 3/4 arm slot while commanding his fastball down in the zone. The 5-foot-10, 145-pound righty also showed a feel for a 69 mph, an 11/5 breaking curveball, a 72 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed and a 66 mph knuckle ball. Brown displayed repeatable mechanics and the ability to throws strikes consistently with all four pitches.

Logan Buell, RHP, Pennsbury HS, Class of 2015
Buell is a 5-foot-9, 190-pound righty that flashed the top curveball of the event at 71 mph. The pitch has tight rotation and showed some tilt with 11/5 break. Buell sat 82-83 with his fastball and also displayed a feel for his 76 mph changeup that lacked much movement. Buell's fastball is deceiving because he hides the ball well and it has some late life. 

Derek Cursio, LHP, Bishop Guilfoyle HS, Class of 2015
Cursio incorporates a forward rocker step and gets out over his front leg well. The lefty sat 78-80 with command of his fastball down in the zone. Cursio had one of the better curveball/changeup combinations at the event. His 70 mph curveball showed solid tilt with tight rotation and his 75 mph changeup had both sink and run. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound junior has a solid frame and is likely to see additional velocity moving forward to go with his three-pitch command. 

Sam Deardorff, RHP, Dallastown Area HS, Class of 2015
Deardorff is a 5-foot-10, 140-pound righty that uses a slow, deliberate windup and an overheard rocker to start. The junior sat 78-80 with some occasional run to his fastball. Deardorff also showed a 68 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 73 mph changeup with some sink.

Ryan DeWalt, RHP, Germantown Academy, Class of 2015
DeWalt put together one of the top bullpen sessions of the day. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound righty sat 85-87 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a deceiving high knee lead leg and substantial arm side run. DeWalt also showed a feel for his 72 mph curveball with 11/5 break and a 78 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. The junior has a solid frame and showed athleticism on Day One as an infielder.

Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish, RHP, Ephrata HS, Class of 2015
Fogarty-Harnish is a 5-foot-11, 145-pound righty that 75-77 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a loose arm and a high knee delivery. The sophomore also displayed a 73 mph breaking ball with slurve action and a 71 mph changeup with arm side run at near fastball arm speed. 

Zak Gagnon, RHP, Freedom HS, Class of 2015
The 6-foot, 165-pound righty sat 80-82 from a high 3/4 arm slot with command of his fastball down in the strike zone. Gagnon also displayed a 70 mph curveball with slider action and a 68 mph changeup, Gagnon has an athletic frame with the potential to add velocity with continued physical maturity.

Billy Gregory, RHP, Wyoming Valley West HS, Class of 2015
Gregory sat 80-81 with his two-seam and 4-seam fastball from a high 3/4 arm slot with an overhead rocker delivery. The 6-foot, 165-pound junior displayed some arm side run to the two-seam fastball. Gregory also commanded a 74 mph curveball with slurve action and a 76 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. The changeup showed both sink and run. 

Dillon Horgan, RHP, Ellwood City HS, Class of 2015
Horgan is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound righty that starts from an overhead rocker that sat 79-80 with a loose delivery. The junior also displayed a 75 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed and a 72 mph curveball with tight rotation. Horgan's curveball showed sharp, late break and at times had biting 12/6 action.

Frankie Jezioro, RHP, Peters Township HS, Class of 2015
Jezioro had a solid weekend showcasing defensive talents as an outfielder and middle infielder. On Day Two he topped at 77 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot. The junior starts from an overhead rocker and displayed a four pitch mix that included a 66 mph 11/5 breaking curveball, a 72 mph changeup and a 62 mph knuckle ball. 

Robert Klinchock, LHP, Mt. Lebanon, Class of 2015
Klinchock is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound lefty that sat 77-78 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. The junior showed command of three complimentary pitches with solid, repeatable mechanics. Klinchock displayed a 65 mph curveball a 72 mph changeup and a 73 mph slider. His slider is thrown from the same arm slot as his fastball and shows sharp, late break.

Michael Kuypers, RHP, Central Bucks South HS, Class of 2015
Kuypers showcased arm side run to a fastball that sat 83-85 from a 3/4 arm slot. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound righty displayed tight rotation on his 70 mph curveball, one of the better breaking balls at the event. Kuypers also flashed a solid changeup at 74 mph that showed down action and was thrown at fastball arm speed.

Dustin Lander, LHP, South Side HS, Class of 2015
Lander showed good tempo and the ability to command three pitches out of a high 3/4 arm slot. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound lefty sat 80-81 with more in him with some minor tweaks to his landing position. Lander also displayed a 69 mph curveball with tight rotation that showed 12/6 rotation when he got on top of it. The junior showed a feel for his 73 mph changeup with some sink. 

Sam Lazowski, RHP, Donegal HS, Class of 2015
Lazowski is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound righty that continues to develop. The junior sat 78-81 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a long-arm throwing motion. Lazowski showed command of three complimentary pitches including a 66 mph curveball, a 71 mph changeup and a 68 mph splitter. The splitter, a new addition to his arsenal, showed solid tumble and was controlled down in the zone.

Steve Moppert, RHP, Penncrest HS, Class of 2015
Moppert showcased a four-pitch arsenal with the ability to command all pitches for strikes. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound righty sat 81-82 with his fastball out of a high 3/4 arm slot. His 70 mph curveball showed 11/5 break and he displayed a feel for his 73 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed with some run. Moppert's best pitch is a 76 mph cutter that is thrown from the same arm angle as his fastball and shows good late movement.

Jon Peterson, LHP, Hemfield HS, Class of 2015
Peterson is a 6-fooot, 185-pound lefty displayed arm side run to his fastball out of a 3/4 arm slot with the ability to pound the strike zone. The junior also displayed a feel for a slider with tight, late break and a solid changeup with late downward action. 

Kyle Peterson, RHP, State College HS, Class of 2015
Peterson is a 6-foot-6, 255-pound righty that has progressed significantly in the past year. The junior sat 82-83 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with fastball command. Peterson also displayed a 69 mph curveball with slider action, a 72 mph changeup at fastball arm speed with some run and sink, and a developing 73 mph splitter. His splitter, which he began to throw late last fall, shows hard down action and has the potential to be his signature pitch. 

Jake Potock, RHP, Shaler Area HS, Class of 2015
Potock was the most impressive arm at the event. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound righty sat 84-86 with arm side run to his fastball out of a high 3/4 arm slot. His fastball is heavy and has late sink consistently. Potock also displayed two quality complimentary pitches including a 79 mph slider and a 71 mph changeup. The changeup is thrown at fastball arm speed and has significant run and sink.

C.J. Pruitt, RHP, Sun Valley HS, Class of 2015
Pruitt stood out as one of the top arms at the event. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound righty has an athletic frame and works quickly. He showcased a fastball that sat 86-87 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Pruitt was free and easy throughout his bullpen indicating additional velocity is there if needed. The junior also displayed a 72 mph 11/5 breaking curveball, a 78 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed with arm side run, and a 77 mph knuckle ball.

Tim Quinn, LHP, Malvern Prep, Class of 2015
Quinn is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound lefty that showed an up tempo delivery out of an over the top arm slot. The junior showed command of a three pitch mix. Quinn's curveball showed the potential to be an out pitch with varying degrees of break, with 12/6 rotation and late down break when he stayed on top of the pitch. The lefty will need to continue to develop his changeup that currently lacks significant movement. 

Ashton Raines, RHP, Strath Haven HS, Class of 2015
Raines displayed command of his fastball that sat 80-81 out of a 3/4 arm slot. While the pitch was flat he did show the ability to throw it consistently for strikes. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound righty also displayed a 70 mph curveball with slurve action, a 71 mph changeup and 76 mph cutter. The changeup was one of the best at the event with sinking action at fastball arm speed. Raines' cutter gives him a second complimentary pitch that can get outs. He showed solid command of the cutter that showed late movement down in the zone.

Kyle Raubenstine, RHP, South Western HS, Class of 2015
Raubenstine displayed good tempo and repeatable mechanics with a fastball that sat 78-79 out of a 3/4 arm slot. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound righty also displayed a 66 mph curveball and a 70 mph changeup. The changeup was the junior's best pitch, showing some arm side run down in the zone.

Dylan Richards, RHP, Exeter Township HS, Class of 2015
Richards sat 78-80 with some arm side run out of a 3/4 arm slot with some hook action to his delivery. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound righty also showed good feel for a 2-seam fastball at 78 mph with even more arm side run. Richards' displayed good feel for a 71 mph changeup with solid run and occasional sink and also flashed a 69 mph slider with short, late break.

Gabe Smith, RHP, William Penn Charter HS, Class of 2015
Smith has an athletic, fluid tempo to his high 3/4 delivery. He showed solid fastball command with arm side run at 82-84. Smith also displayed a feel for his 73 mph curveball that had tight 11/5 rotation. The junior's 73 mph changeup was thrown at fastball arm speed and showed some down action. With a year of inactivity due to ACL surgery, Smith appears primed for a breakout spring and a big rise in his stock.

Andrew Stambaugh, RHP, Dallastown Area HS, Class of 2015
Stambaugh is a 6-foot-3, 135-pound righty that has plenty of room to add to his frame. He sat 72-74 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. The junior also displayed a 65 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 68 mph changeup. Stambaugh's changeup is a solid pitch with some sink and considerable arm side run thrown at fastball arm speed. 

Bryson Turner, RHP, Brandywine Heights HS, Class of 2015
Turner is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound righty that has shown considerable development in the past 12 months. The junior sat 79-82 out of a high 3/4 arm slot, an increase of nearly 10 mph from the same event last year. Turner also displayed a feel for a 70 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 74 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. If Turner continues to add to his frame additional development and velocity is still possible.
