Preseason All-State Showcase: Previewing the Unsigned Seniors

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The Preseason All-State Showcase is set for February 15 and 16 at the B2B Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA. The event serves as the end of the indoor events schedule and an opportunity for the top prospects in the state to showcase their skills one last time prior to the start of high school baseball practices in early March. As we draw closer to the event we will preview some of the top prospects on the roster by position.

Class of 2014

This year's Preseason All-State Showcase has been expanded to a two-day event to better serve the number of talented prospects looking to participate. Of the nearly 180 prospects that will participate during the course of the event, just six are from the Class of 2014. Following is a closer look at the seniors on the roster.

RHP Michael Hunter (Brandywine Heights)

Hunter is a 6-foot-5, 195-pound prospect that sits in the upper 80s. He is the lone prospect on the two-day roster that is signed. Hunter originally committed to the University of Pittsburgh before changing his commitment and signing an NLI with Marist in November. Hunter is ranked No. 39 in the PA and No. 283 in the PBR combined Class of 2014 rankings.

SS/OF/RHP Jake Pacheco (Emmaus)

Pacheco is currently ranked No. 205 in the PA Class of 2014, but could rise significantly with a solid performance next weekend. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound unsigned senior had the top all-around performance at the Eastern PA College Prospect Showcase in January. Pacheco showcased the top outfield arm (87 mph) and infield arm (84 mph) at the event and went on to sit 81-83 from the mound.

RHP Zach Newmyer (Red Land HS)

Newmyer is coming off a breakout 2013 season in which he was a 1st Team Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division pitcher. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound righty sits 83-85 with arm side run to his fastball and is ranked No. 149 in the PA Class of 2014. Newmyer has added 10 mph to his fastball in the past two years and with his frame does not appear to be close to finished developing.

C/2B Travis Renner (University HS, WV)

Renner is ranked No. 11 in the WV Class of 2014. The 6-foot, 185-pound prospect quarterbacked his high school team during a deep run in the WV state playoffs this past fall. Renner has hit .475 with nine home runs and 54 RBI during his last two years of high school baseball.

C Garrett Palmeri (Comsewogue HS, NY)

Palmeri is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound catcher from Port Jefferson Station, New York. He hit .350 as a junior in 2013 and plays travel baseball with the NY Nationals.

C Shawn Shaner Jr. (Kittaning HS)

Shaner is a 5-foot-8, 160-pound backstop that plays summer baseball with the Kittaning/Worthington Palomino team. Shaner, who also plays football, runs a 7.30 60-yard dash and has shown pop times of 2.05-2.10.
