Q & A with Pitt Commit: Catcher Ben Snyder

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Ben Snyder 2Ben Snyder, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound catcher from Red Land HS, has announced his commitment to the University of Pittsburgh. The No. 19 ranked player in the Class of 2014 hit .308 with 16 RBI in 2013. Snyder is an excellent receiver and has shown consistent pop times of 1.95-2.05. Snyder's performance at the Preseason All-State Showcase in February solidified him as one of the top catching recruits in Pennsylvania in the Class of 2014.

Prep Baseball Report talked with Snyder about his college choice and the recruiting process.

PBR: Where have you decided to attend college and why did you make this choice?

Snyder:
I have decided to attend the University of Pittsburgh due to their outstanding academics and their baseball program heading to the ACC.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Snyder: I was considering Penn State and UNC Charlotte at the time.

PBR: Was distance from home a factor in your decision?

Snyder: Distance was not a factor for me; however, being closer to home is a plus because now my parents will be able to come to some games.

PBR: Where did the coaches first see you?  How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?

Snyder: Pitt first saw me last fall. I didn’t have much interest until this winter. I sent them a recruiting video and then started to call Coach Oakes on a weekly basis.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Snyder: They expect me to compete for a starting job as a freshman. I will be 1 of 3 catchers in the program at that time so all I can do now is put in the work.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help your team?

Snyder: I think my biggest strength is my defense behind the plate and leadership.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from this past summer?

Snyder: I play for Chandler Baseball 2014’s. My most memorable moment from this past summer was definitely the Perfect Game event at East Cobb in Marietta, GA.

PBR: What is your current GPA?

Snyder: My current GPA is 3.87.

PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for your team going into your senior season?

Snyder: For my senior season I want to make a run in the state playoffs.

PBR: How did Prep Baseball Report aid you in gaining exposure as a potential college baseball recruit?

Snyder: I was able to show my profile on PBR to coaches and the video helped in the off-season when coaches cannot go out and recruit.
