Q&A With VCU Commit Brian Goodling

Brian Goodling is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound RHP from Carlisle High School who recently committed to Virginia Commonwealth University. His 3-3 record and 2.16 ERA in 2012 are solid numbers at first glance, but delving a bit deeper the numbers become much more impressive. Goodling's three wins on the mound last season accounted for 75% of the total number of wins for Carlisle HS, which suffered through a 4-14 campaign. Using a mid-80's fastball, changeup and curveball, Goodling struck out 66 batters in 45.1 innings of work while yielding just 18 walks. He limited hitters to just 38 hits and threw complete games in four of his eight starts on the hill.

Goodling attributes much of his success and development as a pitcher to his travel baseball coaches. "I play with Elite Baseball of Lancaster in the summer and fall. I have enjoyed the entire three years I spent working with coaches Matt Wertz and Matt Knox, learning the game of baseball on a different level than I had ever experienced before. They brought be a long way since I first met them.  I owe them the world", said Goodling.

Goodling had also been considering Bucknell, UT-Martin and UAB-Huntsville. According to Goodling, "I decided to attend VCU because of its strong baseball and engineering programs. I also like the fact that it is located in a diverse city and is the perfect distance from home."

Goodling, who maintains a 3.98 unweighted GPA, feels that he will see time in the bullpen initially at VCU. In preparation for the transition to college he has set some goals. "I want to keep gaining strength and hopefully add some more velocity before my senior season of high school. As a team, we would like to make the playoffs. Last year was an off year and I think that this year we have a chance to do some damage. I hope to lead the way this spring for the Carlisle Thundering Herd."
