Recruiting News: LHP Brendan McKay

Brendan McKayBrendan McKay has made it look pretty easy over the first two years of his high school career. He is the top uncommitted Class of 2014 prospect in the state and is currently ranked No. 6 in PA and No. 34 in the PBR combined rankings.

McKay was 6-0 with a 0.88 ERA in 48 innings, striking out 57 and walking 12, and batted .480 with two home runs and 20 RBI during a breakout freshman season in 2011. He followed that up by putting together a 9-1 record with a 0.52 ERA in 81 innings with 98 strikeouts, 12 walks and three saves in 2012. McKay hit .400 with two home runs, 10 doubles and 22 RBI during his sophomore campaign.

Those numbers are awfully hard to top, but McKay has bulked up and added some additional velocity to his arsenal of pitches. At 6-foot-2, 210-pounds he has the look of a Division I baseball player. McKay currently has Kentucky, Louisville and Wake Forest high on his list, but has heard from many other programs.

McKay, who was named to the PBR Preseason All-State team, was a member of Team Pennsylvania at the Midwest Future Games last August. In four innings, he struck out eight, allowed one hit and no runs behind an easy 83-86 mph with arm-side life. McKay worked both sides of the plate, and flashed a plus 72-74 mph curveball. McKay commanded the strike zone with three pitches, and looked to have plenty more in the tank. He also showed an athletic left-handed swing at the plate, and could probably do both at the next level.

With the addition of 20 pounds to his frame, McKay looks primed for a dominant 2013 high school season and the list of DI programs that are contacting him is likely to continue to grow.
