Scouting Notes: Saegertown vs. McDowell

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The Saegertown Panthers are accustomed to winning (39-4 over the past two seasons), so losing back-to-back games to start the season wasn't a glitch, it was a wake-up call. The Panthers season began with losses to AAA #2 South Park and AAAA Allderdice while on a spring trip to South Carolina. It appears that a month later, the Panthers have answered that wake-up call and righted the ship.

Fueled by four consecutive hits and three runs in the top of the first inning, Saegertown (8-2) cruised to its eighth consecutive win. Miami of Ohio recruit Stephen Sada coaxed a leadoff walk to start the game preceding singles by 2B Mitchell Wood, RF Austin Scere (RBI), C Tyler Walters (RBI) and Waynesburg commit 3B Luke Carter (RBI).

The Panthers added two additional runs in the 3rd inning when DH Drew Durasa walked, LHP Matt Thompson doubled and CF Kyle Wise drove them both in with a double of his own.

McDowell scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Penn State Behrend recruit, catcher Brian Bohman doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a fielder's choice by Gannon recruit Jake Suppa.

Matt Thompson 2The five runs were more than enough for Saegertown starting pitcher Matt Thompson. The junior lefty used just over 100 pitches to go the distance, limiting the Trojans to three hits and one run. Thompson mixed a tailing fastball that he spotted well with an 1/7 breaking curveball and an occasional cut fastball that he ran in on the hands of right-handed hitters. He was efficient and walked just two batters on the day.
