Scouting Team Pennsylvania: The Corner Infielders

The Team Pennsylvania roster for the Under Armour Midwest Future Games has just two primary position corner infielders, but they are very good ones. A number of other players who play third base and first base will see time at these positions during the course of the event, but look for these two players to see much of the time at these two positions.

J.J. Matijevic is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound third baseman from Norwin HS. Matijevic played for the Knights AAAA team that had five Division I recruits, batting third in that stellar lineup. He put together a remarkable spring in which he batted .473 with 35 RBI, seven doubles and six home runs. As a result of his outstanding play he was named the WPIAL AAAA Player of the Year. Matijevic plays his summer baseball for the Evoshield Canes Mid-Atlantic program.

Josh Ockimey is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound left handed hitting first baseman from Neumann-Goretti high school. Ockimey also had a monster spring for his AAAA Philadelphia Catholic League team. Neumann-Goretti lost in the Eastern PA finals, one game shy of the PIAA State Finals. Ockimey was recognized as a league all-star for the second consecutive year. Look for Ockimey to join Matijevic in the heart of the Team Pennsylvania batting order.

Additional players likely to see time at a corner infield position include Brandon Birkhead (Pennsbury), Matt Gordon (Grove City), Eric Ligda (Avon Grove), Christian Porterfield (West Middlesex), and Jamie Switalski (Pine Richland).

Tomorrow we will wrap up our look at the Team Pennsylvania roster with the middle infielders.
