Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

During the month of December we will be counting down to the new year by looking back on the top performances of 2018 at a PBR event. Today we continue our review with a look at the top offensive performances over the past year.

+ Note: a number of top performances have already been discussed recently in our weekly editions of "Rounding the Bases".

Albert Choi OF / Downingtown East, PA / 2019

6/12/18 - Western PA Top Prospect Games

5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter's game changing foot speed was on display all weekend. Choi ran an event best 6.59 60-yard dash on a relatively slow track. He also ran a laser timed 6.48 indoors at the Preseason All-State Showcase in January. Choi's foot speed also translates well to game play as evidenced by his 4.03 trip down the first base line on an infield single and his stand up triple on a ball hit down the left field line. Currently uncommitted, Choi showcased a line drive approach while barreling the baseball consistently to all fields during game action over two days. Choi was also among the leaders at the event in arm strength (88 mph from the outfield) and bat exit velocity (88 mph).

Billy Gerlott 3B / OF / Blue Mountain, PA / 2020

8/16/18 - Fall Kickoff Showcase
Physical 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and initiates his swing with a short, leg-hang stride. Displayed above average balance and rhythm to his swing with an ability to create backspin and a bat exit velocity of 92 mph. Ran a 7.08 60-yard dash and active feet defensively with a soft glove hand. Made all plays look routine while playing through the baseball routinely with accurate 78 mph arm strength across the diamond. Definite high follow in this class with a chance to be a quality defender and run producing bat at the next level.

Quinn Hanafin 3B / OF / Sayre Area , PA / 2020

10/27/18 - Elite Prospect Showcase
5-foot-9, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a toe-tap stride. Showcased a compact swing with a very strong lower half and the ability to create backspin. Consistently made loud contact while showing present power to the pull side. Registered a bat exit velocity of 86 mph and ran a 7.44 60-yard dash. Displayed solid actions defensively with active feet while routinely playing through the baseball. Showed ability to make plays on the move with accurate 82 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Joshua Hoffman SS / 2B / Belle Vernon Area, PA / 2019

10/27/18 - PBR Mid-Atlantic ProCase
5-foot-9, 155-pound Youngstown State commit packs plenty of strength in a smaller frame. Ran an event best 6.51 laser timed 60-yard dash and followed that up with a 6.52 for good measure. The right-handed hitter starts from a wide, square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. The same fast-twitch actions are present in his swing as creates significant barrel whip with an aggressive hip turn and strong forearms. Registered an 88 mph bat exit velocity while swinging wood. Showcased enough arm strength (84 mph) to remain on the left side of the diamond defensively at the next level, but glove hand is stiff. His foot speed and physical size will likely necessitate a move to center field to better utilize his tools.

Brendan O'Donnell OF / RHP / Great Valley, PA / 2019

10/27/18 - PBR Mid-Atlantic ProCase
6-foot-2, 200-pound two-way prospect is a Rider commit. O'Donnell impressed with his well-rounded skill set just days after completing his high school football season. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing from a high hands load. Barreled the baseball consistently with authority, showing present power to both gaps with a bat exit velocity of 93 mph while swinging wood. Ran a 6.83 laser timed 60-yard dash and showcased 92 mph arm strength from the outfield. The primary outfielder also topped at 86 mph during his bullpen session.

John Seibert C / OF / Warwick, PA / 2020

8/19/18 - Team PBR - Fall Kickoff Showcase Tournament
6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed hitter picked up right where he left off following an impressive showing as a member of Team Pennsylvania at the PBR Future Games.
