Top Performer Report

The 2023 RHP stood out in his bullpen at out Preseason All State - Southwest (Afternoon) showcase. Vargo was able to step up on the mound and immediately make his presence known by pumping fastball after fastball into the zone. Vargo has a very mature approach on the mound as he doesn't seem to try to do too much, he just simply works within what he's comfortable doing. The intriguing part of all this is that while his max fastball velo checked in at 87.2 MPH, he appears to have much more left in the tank. Vargo is more than capable of being a 90+ MPH arm in the next few months. With crisp mechanics that he clearly trusts, Vargo is able to plate two off speed pitches just as easily as he can with his heater. The SL is a little larger, closer to a slurve, with a round movement profile (-6" induced vertical break, -13" horizontal movement). With a zone percentage of 67%, Vargo is already threat with two pitches he can zone up with a big difference in velocity. Round out his arsenal is a pitch that we took a liking to, his split change. Vargo works this split change to the bottom of the zone routinely with up to 16" of arm side fade. The split change is more than likely a swing and miss pitch he is able to throw in advantage counts. When he showed it off during his bullpen, it was consistently thrown to the bottom of the zone that would surely induce weak, roll over contact in game situation. If Vargo is able to bring the velo up a couple ticks, he could see himself jumping up in the '23 rankings a little bit more, as he already has the pitch-ability.
