Uncommitted Senior RHP Scott Hughes Shines at WV Top Prospect Games

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia came to a close with the 2nd Annual WV Top Prospect Games on August 8 and 9. Prospects from four states assembled at the YMCA Kennedy Center Field in Huntington, WV for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities. Today we begin our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the prospects that participated as a member of the Grey Team.

Kirk Jennings Kirk Jennings, OF/3B, (Cabell Midland HS, WV), Class of 2017

Jennings has a very projectable 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a short lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Jennings displayed above average barrel whip and a feel for the barrel in one of the top rounds of batting practice. The junior registered a 90 mph bat exit velocity and went 3-for-6 at the plate in game action.

Jennings flashed athletic actions defensively and the ability to go get the baseball with his foot speed (6.70 60-yard dash). While he lists third base as his alternate position, his 80 mph arm strength and athleticism will likely make him an outfielder at the next level.

Mason Adkins, MIF/OF, (Williamstown HS, WV), Class of 2018

Adkins displayed a 77 mph bat exit velocity from a square stance. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound left-handed hitter utilizes a lift-and-replace stride and a short swing path with a tendency to allow the barrel to drag through the hitting zone. Adkins showcased 7.31 foot speed and developing arm strength (78 mph) in the outfield.

Lane Casto, 3B/RHP, (Ripley HS, WV), Class of 2017

Casto is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitter that starts from a square stance. A leg lift stride initiates his swing producing a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Casto 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases on day two of the event. The two-way prospect ran a 6.94 60-yard dash and displayed a 71 mph arm across the diamond. Casto sat 77-79 from a high 3/4 arm slot with heavy arm-side run to his fastball. The junior also flashed a 63 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 76 mph changeup during his time on the mound.

Jared Cleghorn, RHP/OF, (Bridgeport HS, WV), Class of 2016

Cleghorn sat 82-83 while topping at 84 mph from a 3/4 arm slot during three innings of work with five strikeouts. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-hander also showcased a 67 mph curveball with 10/4 rotation, a 70 mph slider with later, shorter break, and an occasional knuckle ball at 67 mph. The two-way prospect ran a 7.25 60-yard dash and flashed an 80 mph arm from the outfield. Cleghorn starts his right-handed swing from a slightly open stance and shows good balance throughout. He displayed a solid feel for the barrel in an above average round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph.

Connor Fields, C/2B, (Buffalo HS, WV), Class of 2017

Fields is a 5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitter that starts from a square stance with a high hands load. He utilizes a short, lift-and-replace stride and a flat barrel path in creating a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. The junior went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI on day two of the event. Fields ran a 7.44 60-yard dash and flashed pop times of 2.31-2.38 on throws of 66 mph from the crouch defensively. Continued physical maturation and strength gains will benefit Fields' in all facets of the game.

Dylan Foster, C, (Woodrow Wilson HS, WV), Class of 2016

Foster showcased pop times of 2.18-2.26 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound right-handed hitter showcased a strong lower half and the ability to consistently barrel the baseball from a square stance with a bat exit velocity of 81 mph. Foster excelled at the plate in game action going 3-for-5 with a double and a sacrifice fly. The uncommitted senior showed solid foot speed running a 7.33 60-yard dash.

Hunter Haddix, RHP/1B, (Bridgeport HS, WV), Class of 2016

Haddix worked three innings sitting 78-79 from a 3/4 arm slot with two strikeouts and three hits allowed. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander gets significant arm side run from his fastball and relies heavily on his 72 mph slider that he throws routinely for strikes. Haddix went 2-for-3 at the plate and made an athletic diving play at first base during his only day of game action. The uncommitted senior has a projectable frame and should draw interest moving forward as a potential two-way prospect.

Scott HughesScott Hughes, RHP, (Central Valley HS, PA), Class of 2016

Hughes was dominant on the mound during his three innings of work sitting 82-83 while striking out five. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-hander pounded the zone from an over-the-top arm slot and put hitters away with a biting 74 mph curveball that at times shows 12/6 rotation. Hughes has a projectable frame and little wasted movement in his delivery. Development of a third pitch should make the uncommitted senior capable of seeing innings early in his college career.

Chandler Kelley, MIF (Hurricane HS, WV), Class of 2018

Kelley is a 5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitter that starts from a slightly open stance with a low hands load. The sophomore displayed a short swing path with a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. Kelley ran a 7.38 60-yard dash and showed developing arm strength (78 mph) across the diamond defensively.

Ryan Loughry, MIF, (Hurricane HS, WV), Class of 2017

Loughry is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter that showcased a 76 mph bat exit velocity from a slightly open stance. The sophomore went 2-for-3 with two runs scored on day one of the event while barreling the baseball on a line drive to left field in his final at bat. Loughry ran a 7.24 60-yard dash and displayed a 71 mph arm across the diamond during defensive evaluations.

Zac McNeel, RHP, (Cabell Midland HS, WV), Class of 2016

McNeel continues make strides on the mound. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-hander sat 84-85 from a high 3/4 arm slot with more yet in the tank. McNeel also commanded a 71 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation, a 79 mph changeup and a 77 mph slider. The slider has a chance to be a solid out pitch at the next level. McNeel worked three innings registering six strikeouts.

Ross Mulhall, 1B/3B, (University HS, WV), Class of 2018

Mulhall is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitter that starts from a square stance with a high hands load. The sophomore starts from a square stance with a high hands load and utilizes a heel raise stride to initiate his swing. Mulhall displayed a bat exit velocity of 76 mph and went 2-for-6 in game action with a double. He showed a soft glove hand around the bag at first base and an accurate 66 mph arm across the diamond.

Cody Pittenger, OF/3B, (Ripley HS, WV), Class of 2016

Pittenger is a 5-foot-8, 170-pound left-handed hitter that impressed with a fluid swing from a slightly open stance. The uncommitted senior starts from a high hands load and generates an 85 mph bat exit velocity with good rhythm throughout his swing path. Pittenger went 2-for-6 at the plate in game action, including a double, and displayed the ability to play outfield and third base. He ran a 7.14 60-yard dash and showed a 76 mph arm across the diamond.

Gordon Swiger, RHP/3B, (Bridgeport HS, WV), Class of 2017

Swiger is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter that led off the game for the Grey team with a single on day two. The junior showcased a 72 mph arm across the diamond during defensive evaluations. Swiger, a primary pitcher, impressed in three innings of work on the mound. He sat 78-79 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a high knee stack and some hip coil to his delivery. Swiger also pounded the zone with a 70 mph slider registering four strikeouts while facing the minimum during his time on the hill.

E.J. Trickett, MIF, (East Fairmont HS, WV), Class of 2016

Trickett displayed solid defensive skills with a 79 mph arm across the diamond. The 6-foot-1, 155-pound uncommitted senior has an athletic frame and should continue to see strength gains through physical maturation. Trickett starts his right-handed swing from a slightly open stance with a heel raise stride that initiates his hands. He flashed a 79 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.17 60-yard dash during the evaluation phase of the event.
